Johnson & Johnson is recruiting a Director for its Ophthalmology Discovery team located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to lead retinal drug discovery programs.
Responsibilities- Leverage extensive preclinical retinal drug development experience to guide the discovery pipeline.
- Drive decision‑making and prioritization, balancing timelines, budgets, and risks.
- Lead, mentor, and motivate team members, including hiring, performance management, and recognition.
- Facilitate collaboration with functional partners and cross‑functional teams for IND‑enabling and Phase I/II activities.
- Communicate progress to senior management, governance committees, and external stakeholders.
- Lead projects across the discovery pipeline and support transition into clinical development.
- Maintain and promote a culture of courage, care, and diversity.
- Provide regular updates and align on strategic priorities with internal and external partners.
- PhD or MD/PhD in Ophthalmology, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, or Neuroscience plus at least 10 years of industry experience (post‑graduate academics and/or clinical experience).
- Deep knowledge of retinal biology, physiology, pathophysiology and preclinical drug development for ocular diseases.
- Expertise in drug development and ocular delivery across multiple platforms (small molecules, oligonucleotides, biologics).
- Proven leadership and problem‑solving skills in pipeline projects.
- Exceptional organization, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks under tight timelines.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and team‑collaborative skills.
- Strong adaptability, motivational influence and drive for team accountability.
Position may require up to 10% travel. Base salary range: $164,000 to $282,900 (US). Eligibility for performance bonus and long‑term incentive plans, subject to company policies.
