Description
The Harvard Art Museums’ Safety & Security Department is accepting applications for a LHT (Less than Half Time) Museum Attendant
. The LHT employees are regularly scheduled to work up to 14 hours per week.
- Under the direction of the Security Manager, provide protection of the visitors, staff and collections of the Harvard Art Museums.
- Patrol galleries and respond to object alarms.
- Maintain surveillance of the visiting public to avoid damage, intentional or accidental, to objects within the collection and on display.
- Provide services to visitors and colleagues; e.g., answer questions, give directions, refer to other sources of information (Visitor Services) when appropriate.
- Stay informed of all museum programming and events to better answer visitor questions.
- Seek to minimize or contain conflict, and engage the Security Manager when needed and as instructed.
- Enforce policies related to conduct of museum visitors, as directed.
- Control and monitor access and egress points of the building.
- Perform duties of escort into restricted areas of the Harvard Art Museums as directed.
- Act calmly and decisively in assisting the evacuation of the public and staff from the building during fire alarms or other emergencies.
- Complete incident reports as necessary and submit them to the Security Manager.
- Perform daily inspections of galleries, back‑of‑the‑house spaces, and report on safety, security, and physical conditions of museum facilities and equipment.
- Work closely with other Harvard Art Museums services and staff members to ensure effective coordination of service efforts through radio and other communication modes.
- Act as a highly visible representative of the Harvard Art Museums Security staff.
- Present a clean, neat, and professional image in accordance with established uniform and appearance standards.
- Maintain a constructive and positive demeanor. Engage with all visitors and staff in a professional and courteous manner.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Schedule and length of term: 14 hours per week maximum. 7 hours each Saturday and Sunday (9:45 am to 5:15 pm). The schedule will be revised to support Thursday late‑night events each month, substituting some hours on a weekend day to fill in on the Thursday events. The revision to support Thursday night events is a requirement for the position. Not to exceed a total of 14 hours per work week.
The Thursday night events are typically the last Thursday evening of each month from 5 pm to 9 pm (subject to change at any time).
This is a term position with an end date of 06/30/2027 with a possibility of extension.
Compensation: $23.49 per hour.
Work location:
The in‑person position is located in the Harvard Art Museums at 32 Quincy St., Cambridge, MA 02138. Parking is not provided, but the Museums building is well‑served by public transportation.
- Minimum three years of customer service experience.
- Ability to patrol a multi‑story museum building for extended periods of time.
- Ability to see clearly in various lighting conditions.
- Must be able to communicate in English clearly via speech and hearing, with or without corrective devices.
- Position requires use of a radio for two‑way communication, and the wearing of an earpiece.
- Must be able to lift and use a fire extinguisher weighing 10 lbs., after being trained.
- Good written and oral communication skills in English.
- Ability to learn and follow procedures and adapt to new procedures.
- Attention to detail.
- Prior security experience desirable.
- Training in (or ability to be trained in) CPR and/or first aid desirable.
Additional Information:
Will be required to wear a uniform provided by the Museums. The Harvard Art Museums are open all year. This position will be scheduled to work on some holidays. Harvard University requires background screening.
