The City of Worcester seeks applicants interested in the position of Public Works Laborer/Motor Equipment Operator (when assigned) for the Department of Public Works. Under the Direction of the Division Directors, the positions are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of construction and yard equipment, maintenance and repair tasks, and are assigned to a work crew and a designated area.
If selected for this position, all employees begin as a Public Works Laborer and earn the Laborer hourly rate. When assigned as a Motor Equipment Operator, employees will earn the Motor Equipment Operator hourly rate. Assignment to operate equipment is assigned by seniority. The typical hours are Monday - Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm and may be required to work any 8 hours in a 24‑hour period, and work any 5 days of the week.
Employees in this position are eligible for overtime, and overtime work is often available.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS- Perform work outdoors under varying weather conditions year‑round
- Operate equipment in connection with the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sewers, water supply and distribution systems, parks, and related facilities
- Loading and unloading trucks, picking up and hauling away street waste
- Perform snow removal operations
- Use common hand tools
- Detect needed mechanical work, make adjustments, and report to management any defects or damage that will prevent proper performance of equipment
- Perform related duties as assigned
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Perform maintenance, repair, and construction work regularly
- Perform manual work requiring considerable strength and endurance safely and daily
- Understand and follow verbal instructions
- Pass a physical and drug test; subject to random drug and alcohol testing
- Know the functions and operating methods of a variety of construction and related equipment
- Know the hazards and safety rules in equipment operation
- Work outdoors under varying weather conditions year‑round
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job
- Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A or B
- Successful query from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Clearing House
- Public Works Laborer: $21.51 hourly
- Sanitation Laborer (when assigned): $22.89 hourly
- Motor Equipment Operator (ONLY WHEN ASSIGNED):
- $29.90 MEO Grade A
- $30.87 MEO Grade B
- $32.70 MEO Grade C
- $33.75 MEO Grade D
Interested candidates must register on the Civil Service list for Motor Equipment Operator as soon as possible. Register by completing a Labor Service Application and submitting it to the City of Worcester's Human Resources Department by mail, email, or fax. Veterans will be given preference when applying for these positions. Proof of possession of a valid and current MA CDL license is required at time of registration.
