Job Description
Summary:
This position administers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to facilitate the patient's breathing. Responsible for evaluating respiratory care for appropriateness and effectiveness and communicates findings/results to other health care professionals. This position may perform role of charge therapist in absence of manager/supervisor.

- Assessment/Treatment (15%):
Reviews available clinical data; collects or recommends obtaining additional data in a patient care setting; prioritizes treatments based on patient condition; uses evidence-based assessment techniques and instruments to collect, analyze, and document data from patients, significant others, and communities; identifies patterns and variances and communicates findings to appropriate people; contributes to the development of the Respiratory Care Plan. - Evaluation (15%):
Identifies opportunities for process improvement; evaluates and documents response to respiratory interventions and outcomes; uses ongoing assessment data to revise diagnoses, outcomes, plan and implementation; disseminates results to the patient and health care team; recommends modifications to the plan based on patient response; determines the appropriateness of the Respiratory Care Plan and recommends modifications as indicated by data. - Procedures/Operations (45%):
Maintains records and communicates information; administers MDI, medication nebulization, posture drainage, positive pressure breathing, mechanical ventilation, oxygen and aerosol therapy; observes patient during treatments; performs auscultation, checks vital signs; notifies medical or nursing personnel of adverse reactions; records pertinent data; prepares for treatment by receiving orders, reviewing requests, prioritizing work, gathering materials, and explaining procedures; maintains airway and provides adequate respiratory support;
performs invasive procedures (e.g., suctioning, arterial blood gas sampling/analysis); responds to stat and code calls and participates in trauma and resuscitation; assists with transport of patients; acts as assistant to physicians during procedures (e.g., intubation, bronchoscopy); manages resources to maintain a safe and efficient environment; participates in shift reports and multi-disciplinary teams; uses hospital systems for order management, test results, billing compliance, documentation, and medication administration;
documents interventions and modifications; applies evidence-based interventions and teaches patients and families; may perform duties of Charge Therapist. - Management of Equipment (5%):
Manages equipment in respiratory care settings; selects, assembles and troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment; ensures regulatory compliance and infection/quality control. - Education/Training of Others (5%):
Provides instruction and mentoring for students and staff; shares knowledge through conferences and presentations; educates patients and families on respiratory therapies; instructs other disciplines on equipment and techniques; supports lifelong learning and continuing education.
Associate's Degree (Required). BLS - Basic Life Support (American Heart Association). For Home Care:
Driver’s License, LIC/State licensure, NBRC certification as applicable by state; CPR certification. Field:
Respiratory Care or certificate; knowledge of respiratory care technology; patient assessment and clinical decision-making skills; 1 year of clinical experience.
