Operating Technician Level 1 Overview

The Operating Technician Level 1 can have responsibility for the equipment spare parts storeroom, material handling, and/or production line operations. All technicians work together with other Cambridge team members to achieve business objectives of safety, quality, productivity, customer service, cost, and environmental protection. The primary accountabilities may include daily production, quality and sanitization procedures, safety compliance, equipment maintenance procedures, materials movement, parts management, data collection, housekeeping, problem solving, and continuous improvement as part of a work team.

This role requires considerable interaction with other team members in the same production unit as well as other production units and support functions.

Core Responsibilities
  • Operate, clean, lubricate, inspect, troubleshoot, and perform changeovers on non-automated and automated packaging equipment.
  • Work with equipment such as Casemaker, Palletizer, Stretch Wrapper, Print/Apply, Case Turner, Case Sealer, Case Packer, Leak Tester, Spout Inserter, and Bottle/Case Conveying. Access and enter downtime information into the OPERA system.
  • Assist maintenance and operating team members with troubleshooting and minor repairs on production equipment. Participate in continuous learning opportunities and seek knowledge of others in the work team to develop skills. Access EAM to issue work request notifications.
  • Confirm availability of packing materials for current and upcoming production runs. Coordinate with operating, planning, and logistic teams to ensure availability. Access SAP/ZQUAL for production schedule and available materials.
  • Adhere to Colgate Quality, cGMP, and Micro cleaning and sanitization standards and guidelines. Perform quality sampling, complete shift production batch records, conduct visual checks on finished cases/pallets, and maintain area cleaning checklists. Use SAP to verify bill of materials for finished case production and OPERA for entering quality check information.
  • Adhere to EOHS requirements, Minimum Safe Behaviors (MSB’s), and wear required PPE.
  • Operate forklift for unloading materials from delivery vehicles and delivering materials to storage locations or production lines. Prepare and load finished product for shipment. Use Warehouse Management System (WMS) for product loading.
  • Understand parts storeroom storage system to locate parts needed for plant needs. Assist with locating parts for equipment maintenance.
  • Use SAP for inventory control, parts stock overview, goods receipts, and maintenance reports. Perform housekeeping activities per established protocol. Support housekeeping assessments as required. Communicate performance status through visual, written, and verbal means.
  • Participate in scheduled reviews of team production performance and use information to support continuous improvement. Apply tools such as Root Cause Analysis to resolve issues and improve results.
  • Fully utilize resources to optimize productivity and meet the needs of customers, businesses, and colleagues.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (Vocational school or technical institute preferred).
  • Capacity to work 12‑hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience and/or a 2‑year technical college degree.
