Posting Summary

TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federal grant‑funded program that serves low‑income, first‑generation college students, and students with a documented disability. The SSS program is charged to serve, engage, retain, and graduate participants. It provides individualized and group tutoring, a structured first‑year transition program, holistic advice, support, coaching, financial literacy, educational workshops, graduate school and career counseling, and grant aid.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of TRiO Student Support Services, the Student Counselor (SC) delivers direct academic and holistic support services to a caseload of undergraduates in the TRiO SSS Program, monitors their progress toward degree completion, and develops, implements, and participates in programs and initiatives designed to support the success of these students. Collaboration with faculty and campus partners (e.g., Center for Learning and Student Success, academic advising offices, Financial Aid, Career Center, Learning Center, Disability Services, and other student affairs offices) is an integral part of the Student Counselor responsibilities.

This is a grant‑funded position contingent upon the availability of funds to support it.

Responsibilities

The Student Counselor provides direct academic and holistic support services to a caseload of undergraduates in the TRiO SSS Program. The role involves monitoring student success, tracking progress toward degree completion, developing and implementing programs to support student success, and collaborating with faculty and campus partners to facilitate comprehensive student support.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience and at least one year of experience in advising, coaching, or mentoring diverse groups of college students.
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively.
  • Working knowledge of student development theory, appreciative advising model, and other student‑centered approaches.
  • Ability to motivate students toward success and achievement of goals.
  • Ability to process/analyze complex information and effectively communicate it to students, parents, and/or administrators.
  • Strong knowledge of student support programs and ability to make proper referrals based on comprehensive assessments.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow through with assisting students.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to function in multi‑campus and team environments.
  • Ability to use personal computer and other office equipment.
Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in education, counseling, social work, or a related field preferred. Experience using emerging technologies and social media to communicate with undergraduates preferred.
