Program Description

The Trauma Recovery Center (TRC) modeled out of the University of California, San Francisco’s TRC strives to promote health, equity, and social justice through the provision of comprehensive, wraparound services that support healing and stability for survivors of violent crime and their loved ones. Our vision is: “A world where every survivor of violence gets the help they need to heal.”

Role Description

The Trauma Counselor provides trauma‑informed, evidence‑based clinical services to survivors of crime through the Trauma Recovery Center (TRC). This position delivers clinical intakes, individual and group psychotherapy, outreach, and care coordination in alignment with the National Alliance of Trauma Recovery Centers (NATRC) model. The Counselor works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to promote hope, healing, safety, resilience, and empowerment among individuals and families impacted by violence and trauma.

Qualifications
  • Active NJ State License Required (Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapist) with a master’s degree in social work, Counseling or a related field.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years post‑graduate clinical experience
  • Knowledge of trauma informed care, adverse childhood experiences, and complex and acute trauma.
  • Experience providing individual and group counseling.
  • Experience with clinical assessments (e.g., psychosocial histories, mental status exams, DSM‑5 diagnoses)
  • Familiarity or training in one or more of the following trauma specific evidenced‑based treatment: CPT, TF‑CBT, EMDR, Seeking Safety, Motivational Interviewing
  • Willingness to complete ongoing EBP training
  • Strong clinical documentation and record‑keeping skills
  • Ability to connect with people of varying backgrounds, appreciate and embrace diversity, and maintain confidentiality. Experience working with trauma survivors from underserved populations, including young people of color, people who are homeless and/or chronically mentally ill, people from immigrant and refugee groups, and LGBTQ people.
  • Willing to work in a flexible and hybrid environment – office, telehealth, school and community settings.
  • Work a flexible schedule including some evenings.
  • Ability to travel between offices and within the community for meetings, training, coalitions and other work‑related matters.

General Responsibilities Clinical Practice
  • Provide culturally responsive, trauma‑informed care that honors the strengths, identities, and lived experiences of clients.
  • Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments, including psychosocial history, mental status examinations, and DSM‑5 diagnoses.
  • Develop individualized service plans that include measurable short‑ and long‑term goals and interventions.
  • Provide individual therapy, group counseling, and psycho educational services using evidence‑based trauma interventions.
  • Deliver assertive outreach and engagement to support client participation and retention in services.
Care Coordination & Documentation
  • Coordinate care with internal programs and external service providers to ensure comprehensive, client‑centered support.
