Building Maintenance, Carpentry
The Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work across a variety of construction, renovation, and maintenance projects on VOADV properties, including general maintenance and repairs. This position serves as a crew leader on in-house construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest professional standards. The Carpenter reports directly to the Construction and Maintenance Foreman.
Duties and Responsibilities- Thorough knowledge of carpentry trade practices, building codes, and general construction methods.
- Frame walls using metal and wooden studs; install sheetrock, including taping and finishing.
- Install interior and exterior doors, windows, trim, and cabinetry.
- Construct stairs, railings, decks, and related structural elements.
- Install and finish a variety of flooring types, including hardwood, laminate, tile, and vinyl.
- Working knowledge across multiple trades (plumbing, electrical, painting, HVAC) with the ability to complete basic plumbing repairs (faucets, drains, valves, toilets), electrical maintenance (fixtures, outlets, switches), and minor HVAC tasks (filter changes, vent cleaning, escalation).
- Skilled in the use of a wide range of hand and power tools, including saws, drills, nailers, and levels.
- Familiarity with OSHA safety standards and safe work practices on construction sites.
- Strong communication and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Estimate material quantities and plan daily work assignments.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on buildings, fixtures, and equipment.
- Diagnose and repair structural, finish, and cosmetic deficiencies throughout properties.
- Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and equipment, including forklifts and light trucks.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and a work vehicle in clean and safe condition.
- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and required training sessions.
- Interact respectfully and professionally with clients, staff, and outside contractors.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of client and staff information in accordance with organizational policies.
- Comply with all VOADV policies, procedures, and professional standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to climb stairs and work from ladders while carrying or using tools.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout an 8-hour shift.
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined or restricted spaces.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods on various surfaces and terrain.
- Ability to operate power and non-power hand tools with precision.
- Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
2-5 years of experience:
Two-year technical degree in carpentry, construction technology, or a related field — OR — equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 5 years of journeyman-level carpentry experience in commercial or residential construction. Working knowledge across multiple trades (plumbing, electrical, painting, HVAC). Basic math skills for measuring, estimating, and calculating materials. Must be available for on-call coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

- Valid driver’s license.
