Recreation Specialist Population

Salary

$50,000–$55,000 annually PLUS full benefits

Qualifications
  • 21 years of age
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in recreation therapy or a related human services field.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • 1 year of experience providing direct care to youth in a behavioral health agency or institutional setting.
  • Experience in planning or implementing recreational activities for youth in residential settings preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills with diverse backgrounds.
  • Physical ability to participate in therapeutic holds and biannual certification.
  • Trauma‑informed care and crisis de‑escalation skills.
  • Knowledge of recreational therapy principles and program evaluation.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and directing therapeutic play and recreation programs for adolescents in an Intense Residential Treatment Program.
  • Develop, plan, supervise, and participate in daily recreational and social activities, including outdoor programs and physical exercise.
  • Design and establish recreational programs tailored to youth’s physical and mental capabilities.
  • Maintain structure and follow daily schedule.
  • Implement behavior plans and provide documentation of youth behavior and interventions.
  • Assist youth in developing and using problem‑solving, decision‑making, conflict resolution, and independent living skills.
  • Transport and/or accompany youths to appointments or field trips.
  • Administer medication when necessary.
  • Support constructive youth‑family visitation and community activity involvement.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and clinical coverage per schedule.
  • Maintain program vehicles, supplies, and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with program director and treatment team on activities, schedules, costs, and documentation.

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and required certifications (First Aid and CPR).
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Maintain a professional dress code.
  • Report child abuse per state law.
  • Commit to eliminating restraint and seclusion.
  • Deliver services in culturally and linguistically competent manner.
  • Possess temperament to care for youth with special needs.
  • Support youth and family visitation.
