Work Schedule: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday. Occasional evenings & weekends on an emergency basis. Will be required to work some holidays.
Location: Kershaw County Solid Waste Department, Cassatt, SC
Required Licenses: Valid SC driver's license with good driving record.
Summary: Material handlers play a vital role in the county’s recycling efforts. They transport recyclable materials from the (10) recycling / convenience centers to the landfill for distribution to recycling facilities.
Qualifications: Requires a High School diploma or equivalent combination of training and experience. Required to have and maintain a clear background check, a good driving record and a valid SC driver’s license. Must pass drug screening and be dependable and prompt.
Reports to: Solid Waste Supervisor
Responsibilities: It will be the responsibility of the employee to support the County to:
- Provide quality service to the residents of Kershaw County.
- Present a positive image to the community.
- Maintain positive and productive work relationships with all personnel.
- Conform with all applicable safety rules and regulations.
- Under regular supervision, performs a variety of manual labor tasks related to the operations of the County's C&D landfill, two (2) closed municipal landfills, and ten (10) recycling / convenience centers.
Essential duties: Essential duties shall include, but will not be limited to, the following tasks:
- Assist in the transportation, stacking and loading of all electronic waste from recycling centers into tractor trailer for transport
- Assist in the transportation, stacking and loading of all tires from recycling centers into tractor trailer for transport
- Assist in the transportation, stacking and loading of all plastics/aluminum from recycling centers into tractor trailer for transport
- Driving county vehicles attached to trailers to transport equipment, tools, personnel to/from County landfill to/from recycling centers.
- Operating mobile trash compactor at all sites for compaction of materials inside open top trash containers.
- Maintenance, carpentry and cleaning of landscape and buildings at all recycling centers and County landfill Assists in cleaning and maintaining all recycling centers throughout the County
- Assists in landfill & recycle center operations by removing litter & unauthorized waste, maintain grass cover on two closed municipal landfills, repairing erosion areas, screening loads, and other assigned duties.
- Assists in cleaning and maintaining all recycling centers throughout the County and County landfill
- Assist in cleaning and maintenance of County equipment.
- As needed, assist other County Departments such as Public Works, Utilities (Sewer), Recreation, Building Maintenance, Administration, etc.
- Typical duties may include assisting with roadway maintenance, clearing / maintaining sewer rights-of-way, landscaping, etc.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Skills:
Must be able to perform manual labor, to include but not limited to the following:
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and sit for extended periods.
- Able to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Able to use mechanical tools and equipment in completion of daily tasks.
