Position OverviewAs a Platform Engineer II, you significantly contribute to TrueNAS Enterprise’s Platform team with typically 2‑3 years of experience or equivalent expertise, evaluating hardware components. You will be responsible for development, debugging, and lifecycle support of high‑performance NAS solutions. This role sits at the intersection of high‑speed digital design, enterprise storage (NVMe/SATA/SAS), and advanced networking. You will interact with our design partners, manufacturing facilities, and end customers to ensure our hardware is robust, scalable, and reliable.
You’ll work alongside senior platform engineers who own TrueNAS internals, storage software integration, and customer escalations.
This position is based in Campbell, CA. Base pay range: $100,000 to $110,000 USD annually. Benefits include health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, paid time‑off, 401(k), health and flexible spending accounts, stock purchase plan, and more.
The Day‑to‑Day- Lead small‑scale hardware qualification projects, including planning, execution, and validation.
- Develop and maintain test code using Python and shell scripting for system validation and automation.
- Analyze component datasheets and benchmark system performance against requirements.
- Collaborate with OS, Storage Software, and Performance teams to validate system behavior and results.
- Partner with cross‑functional teams to design and develop server‑level hardware components, focusing on NAS solutions.
- Debug and isolate hardware issues using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG debuggers, serial consoles, and signal analyzers.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot firmware and Linux‑based software issues impacting hardware functionality.
- Configure, test, and validate high‑speed networking interfaces (25
GbE, 400
GbE+) to ensure seamless platform integration. - Work closely with ODMs and component vendors on board design, schematic/layout reviews, and prototype bring‑up.
- Provide technical guidance to manufacturing teams to improve assembly processes, develop functional test suites, and resolve production‑line issues.
- Lead or support field issue investigations, delivering root‑cause analysis for hardware failures in customer data centers.
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 2–3 years of hands‑on experience in server or high‑end enterprise hardware development and familiarity with latest server technologies such as DDR5 and PCIe Gen5 from leaders such as Intel and AMD.
- Understanding of storage protocols (NVMe, SAS, SATA) and hardware architectures.
- Familiarity with Ethernet controller architectures, PHYs, and high‑speed Ser Des.
- Familiarity with BMC/IPMI and BIOS/UEFI interactions with hardware.
- Knowledge of thermal management and mechanical constraints in 1U/2U/4U server chassis.
- Ability to manage technical relationships with external partners and translate customer pain points into hardware requirements.
