Managing Technical Consultant – Fisheries Biologist (Fixed‑Term) If you’re a senior fisheries professional ready to step into a role that blends technical leadership, high‑impact project work, and the opportunity to shape the future of aquatic resource management across Canada and beyond, this is your moment.
Why This Role Matters You will guide major, multimillion‑dollar projects, influence environmental outcomes at a national scale, and help drive the execution of ERM’s global strategy within a rapidly growing, world‑class Biodiversity & Ecosystems practice. The position can be located in one of ERM’s offices in Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Calgary, Saskatoon, Vancouver or Toronto.
What You’ll Do Travel to remote regions across Canada to support field programs and stewardship initiatives.
Contribute to transformative mining and energy projects for major clients.
Lead and manage fisheries field programs across freshwater systems in Canada.
Design, implement, and monitor fisheries offsetting and compensation programs.
Compile, manage, analyze, and interpret fish community, biology, and habitat data; support database management.
Prepare technical documents including baseline studies, monitoring reports, impact assessments, permitting applications, and offsetting plans.
Actively contribute to ERM’s Canadian and international aquatics/fisheries technical communities.
Provide mentorship and guidance to junior biologists and field technicians.
Required Qualifications
B.Sc. in Fisheries Biology or a related discipline.
Registered Professional Biologist (or eligibility to obtain designation).
4+ years of consulting experience in freshwater fish and fish habitat assessments, sampling, aquatic biology, and water quality programs.
Advanced written and oral communication skills, including technical reporting and permitting documentation.
Strong knowledge of federal, provincial, and territorial regulations relevant to mining and oil & gas.
Proven ability to manage deadlines in a fast‑paced environment, work independently with minimal supervision, and travel extensively.
Excellent problem‑solving skills and a strong commitment to safety.
Valid driver’s license and/or ability to operate a company vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications M.Sc. in Fisheries Biology or a related discipline.
6+ years of consulting experience in freshwater fish and fish habitat assessments, sampling, aquatic biology, and water quality programs.
Experience in hydrology, instream flow assessment, hydroacoustic/bathymetric assessment, and/or fish habitat offsetting.
Electrofishing certification, Intermediate First Aid, and/or Swiftwater Rescue Training.
Experience mentoring junior staff.
Positive, collaborative, self‑starter mindset aligned with ERM’s global mission.
Other Requirements Pleasure Craft Operator’s License.

Benefits Annual base pay ranges from $95,651 to $119,999 CAD, depending on education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. The role may also be eligible for bonus pay. The benefits package includes paid time off, parental leave, medical, dental, vision, life, disability, AD&D insurance, and 401(k) or RRSP/DPSP options.
