Maintenance Worker, Utility Technician, Building Maintenance
Canby Utility is seeking a dedicated and skilled individual to join our water distribution team as a Utility Worker I, II, or III, depending on qualifications. The individual will perform work in construction, maintenance, operation, inspections, and repairs of our water distribution system. This position can be physically demanding and requires outdoor work in various weather conditions.

- Install, repair, maintain, or replace water services, including residential, commercial, industrial, irrigation, and fire prevention systems.
- Install, extend, or replace water mains as necessary. Readily identify and locate water distribution facilities; conduct disinfection and pressure test of water mains, services, and fire suppression systems to ensure water safety.
- Repair, service, and maintain water meters, hydrants, and valves.
- Assist in job site preparation, including barricading work zone, traffic control, signage, shoring, operating trenching equipment, locators, tapping machines, specialized equipment, heavy equipment (if qualified), power tools, shovel/hand digging, and turn off/on services. Ensure the work area is safe and clean during all job phases.
- Assist in completing reports and maintaining jobs, mapping, time, materials, supplies, and equipment documentation.
- Assist in ensuring that all excavations are executed safely and properly, including shoring use as necessary.
- Respond to inquiries from the public regarding water service, operations, and projects as necessary or directed. Provide quality customer service when dealing with the public at all times, and professionally respond to the public’s concerns, complaints, and questions as needed or requested. Ability to provide information to the public about the utility’s water service policies and procedures.
- Read assigned water and occasionally electric meters, and accurately record manual reads/re-reads in handheld devices. Maintain vegetation surrounding water meters, hydrants, valves, and blow-offs to ensure safety and ease of access. Assist in troubleshooting reading errors and detecting leaks.
- Ensure proper care, use, protection, and accountability of any and all materials, tools, and equipment. Cleans, stocks, and loads vehicles. Inspect vehicle loads before leaving the facility and worksites to ensure all loads and equipment are secured and properly stored. Promptly reports any issues or needed repairs.
- Attend regular monthly safety meetings. Report safety concerns, problems, and violations.
- Assist water treatment plant personnel with non-treatment functions as needed.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance. Must also be willing and able to respond to water emergencies any hour of the day and night, weekends, and holidays, and as assigned on standby.
- Assists with warehouse and inventory duties as needed; must be forklift certified to load, unload, and receive products as needed.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Examples of Qualifications by Level:
Utility Worker I is an entry-level water worker position that requires a Water Distribution (WD) Level 1 Certification within 18 months of hire, a valid Oregon Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and any combination of education and experience required of a Level 1 certification. Previous experience in construction, maintenance, and repair of underground utility infrastructure preferred; however, on-the-job training is provided.
Utility Worker II is an advanced-level water worker position that requires WD Level 2 Certification upon hire, Cross Connection Specialist Certification within six months of hire, a valid Oregon Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), competent person training, and heavy equipment experience, in addition to the requirements of a Utility Worker I.
