Permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Technician 1 (HT1) – District 4, Mahoning County

This position is classified as either Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Technician 1 (HT1) depending on the applicant’s minimum qualifications. The role involves performing a variety of highway maintenance tasks on Ohio highways and bridges.
Responsibilities- Serve the public by ensuring roads in Ohio are safe and well maintained.
- Attend training to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); candidates who already possess a valid CDL may be considered for the appropriate classification.
- Perform highway maintenance activities such as flagging, pothole patching, guardrail repair, litter pickup, mowing, and other routine maintenance tasks.
- Execute snow and ice operations when required.
- Base Pay: $20.85/hr for HMW1, $21.64/hr for HT1.
- Full‑time schedule, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.
- Union representation: OCSEA.

Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Formal education in arithmetic (addition, subtraction, reading, writing, speaking common English). Must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement without an airbrake restriction.
Highway Technician 1: Formal education in arithmetic (addition, subtraction, decimals, percentages, fractions) and the ability to read, write, and speak common English. Requires 3 months of training or experience operating basic equipment, and a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement without an airbrake restriction.
Technical & Professional Skills- Highway maintenance, equipment operations, CDL, transportation.

- This position is overtime eligible under FLSA standards.
- All bargaining‑unit new hires must complete a one‑year probationary period.
- Final candidates will undergo a criminal background check and, if selected, a mandatory urinalysis for drug testing. Positive results will disqualify an applicant.
- Applicants may be required to register in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
