Job Summary
The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facilities throughout the state. Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry.
Responsibilities- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility.
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
- Man an armed post (requires annual firearms certification).
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and vehicles.
- Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms.
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule.
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles.
- Monitor visiting areas.
- Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts.
- Cross‑check and maintain movement logs.
- Conduct searches for contraband (including canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches).
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards.
- Inspect inmate mail and property.
- Respond to emergency situations such as fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes following established protocols.
- Follow tool and key control, ensuring proper storage and documentation.
- Attend roll call.
- Document incidents using established reporting practices.
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
- High School Diploma or GED certificate.
- Applicants must acknowledge and agree to the Conditions of Employment within the application process.
- Must have valid U.S. work authorization; DOC does not provide H‑1B sponsorship.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license and a clean driving record; ability to operate a state-owned vehicle.
- Must have no felony convictions, including specific domestic or sexual offenses as outlined in federal statutes.
- Successful completion of a background investigation.
- Successful completion of a comprehensive health screening.
- Completion of all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including defensive tactics and required physical fitness.
- Exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during training and on assignment.
- Willing and able to work all shifts, doubling, weekends and holidays; ability to report during inclement weather.
- Willing to use physical force (as trained) including firearms.
- Willing to work in a locked correctional facility, potentially outdoors in inclement weather.
- TB screening required upon hire.
- Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability.
- Sound judgment, reasoning and decision‑making skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills and teamwork.
- Excellent customer service and attention to detail.
- Ability to read and comprehend English; effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Observation and monitoring skills for inmate care, security, and safety.
- Knowledge of criminal justice systems, statutes, ADA, PREA and CDOC policies.
- Intermediate computer keyboarding and email communication.
- Ability to conduct searches, inspect facilities, operate mechanical doors and security equipment.
- Proficiency in operating firearms, restraints, communication equipment and chemical agents.
- Physical ability to perform defensive tactics, climb stairs, work outdoors and endure high‑stress situations.
- Compliance with the CDOC Drug Deterrence Program and chain of command protocols.
- Bilingual language proficiency.
- Experience in mentoring or volunteer work.
