Position: CDOC Grounds Maintenance Supervisor CSTS I (Canon City)
Location: Cañon City

Job Summary

The Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a Grounds Maintenance Supervisor at a Colorado Department of Corrections prison facility in Canon City, CO.

Primary responsibilities include ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff, and inmates; training and supervising an inmate work crew in grounds‑maintenance operations; and ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant completion of assigned tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites.
  • Train and guide staff and inmates in proper use of tools, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Enforce security procedures, conduct searches, and manage inmate behavior.
  • Supervise inmate workers, set performance standards, and provide training and evaluation.
  • Oversee inspection, repair, and maintenance of grounds including lawn care, landscaping, irrigation, concrete, asphalt, and snow removal.
  • Respond to emergency situations (fights, fires, escapes) in accordance with agency policy.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Four (4) years of employment experience in residential or commercial grounds maintenance.
  • Grounds maintenance experience includes preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance of automated irrigation systems, lawn care, landscaping, concrete work, asphalt patching, fence building, and snow removal.
  • OR combination of at least two (2) years of such experience plus correctional experience in security‑related duties (e.g., detaining, escorting inmates).
  • Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship or degree program that demonstrates equivalent competencies.
Required Competencies
  • Strong work ethic, integrity, and dependability.
  • Ability to follow security policies and maintain tool control.
  • Sound judgment and decision‑making skills.
  • Proficiency in grounds maintenance and project coordination.
  • Effective communication with inmates and staff.
  • Ability to train, coach, and mentor inmate workers.
  • Capacity to respond to emergency situations and maintain composure under stress.
  • Physical ability to climb, work in confined spaces, and operate equipment.
  • Fluent written and verbal English.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Related State of Colorado work experience.
  • Experience designing, installing, and repairing automated irrigation systems.
Conditions of Employment
  • Minimum age 21.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
  • Current U.S. work authorization (no H‑1B sponsorship).
  • Successful completion of Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training (including defensive tactics). Physical standards include lifting, striking, and endurance exercises.
  • Drug screening and tuberculosis screening upon hire.
  • Background investigation required.
  • Adherence to drug‑free workplace policies.
  • Willingness to travel and work rotating shifts.
