Qualifications
  • License and Certification:
    Paraprofessional Educator certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) required.
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent and passed the Praxis Parapro Assessment (prior to March 1, 2007) or the GACE Parapro Assessment required. If these assessments are not completed, 60 semester or 90 quarter hours from a PSC‑approved college or university are required.
  • Experience:

    Experience in a licensed child‑care environment preferred.
  • Skills:

    Knowledge of child development, Microsoft Office Suite, effective interpersonal skills, knowledge of office and media equipment, and ability to act as a representative of Gwinnett County Public Schools.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide support to the instructional program within an assigned classroom, including supervision, care, and instruction of special‑needs students in regular and special‑education settings, and assistance in implementing instruction plans and monitoring student behavior.
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to reinforce IEP goals and objectives, enabling all students to participate.
  • Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a healthcare professional, including diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bag care, medication, etc.
  • Administer tests, homework, and make‑up work to support teachers.
  • Assist medically fragile or physically disabled students in maintaining personal hygiene.
  • Assist students with disabilities in grooming, community accessibility, and other daily needs such as feeding, brushing teeth, toileting, diapering, transferring to the bus, etc.
  • Attend training meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire job‑related information.
  • Confer regularly with teachers to evaluate special‑education student progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Implement and collect data under teacher supervision for behavioral plans designed by IEP teams.
  • Monitor special‑education students during classroom, field trips, community activities, lunchroom, playground, and life‑enrichment activities to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Perform record‑keeping and support functions such as data collection, student file maintenance, paper checking, attendance, and daily logs.
  • Provide instruction under teacher supervision in individual and group activities (math groups, science experiments, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, etc.) to reinforce instructional objectives and IEP plans.
  • Respond to emergency situations involving injured students, fights, behavioral problems, or abusive situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Provide effective principles and procedures of crisis intervention.
  • Assist with monitoring duties in hallways, lunchrooms, restrooms, and/or bus duty as assigned, ensuring appropriate student conduct and escorting students to designated activity areas:
    • Ensure appropriate student conduct during these periods.
    • Escort students to designated activity areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently sits for extended periods and must also stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee may need to use hands for finger dexterity, reach, and manipulation, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Occasionally, the employee may lift or move up to 50 pounds. Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. The job may expose the employee to risks of injury and illness.

    Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
