This position is responsible for the operation of the Detention Center in compliance with Columbia County Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures and state/federal laws to ensure the safe, legal and humane custody and care of incarcerated persons.
CHAIN OF COMMANDThis position answers to a Detention Center Sergeant.
CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES- Maintains jail security by performing routine security checks within/around the facility, searches areas and persons for contraband, maintains accurate counts of inmates at regular intervals, and control entrances/exits and inmate movement throughout the facility.
- Performs tasks of inmate bookings/releases which include: mugshots, fingerprints, consular notifications, victim notifications, and receive/inventory/release inmate property; prepares and processes bonds, documents and searches visitors for inmate visitations, receives funds for inmate accounts, and assists the public.
- Operates control rooms, coordinates movement within the facility, monitors audio and video surveillance equipment, maintains key control and accountability, and maintains inmate headcount.
- Observes inmates to detect, deter or prevent self-destructive or criminal behavior; enforces rules and regulations in maintaining custody of inmates; maintains life functions for inmates, including but not limited to, access to meals, medical care, religious worship, exercise, and hygiene standards without compromising security.
- Performs other duties as needed.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws/ordinances.
- Working knowledge of CCSO/CCDC policies and procedures.
- Skill in written/oral communication, public relations, and the observation of human behavior.
- Ability to administer first aid and CPR.
- Ability to operate computers, copiers, fingerprint equipment, cameras, two-way radios, monitoring equipment, and fire extinguishers.
- Holds Georgia jailer certification or is able to obtain this certification.
- Associate's Degree or able to attain.
- Must become certified in the use of oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray and TASER CEW.
- Must pass all drug screens.
- Walking, running moderate distances, bending, reaching, and climbing stairs and ladders.
- Lifting, dragging, pushing, pulling objects and people.
- Use of hands/feet for self-defense and maintaining a moderate duration of force.
- Use of restraining and control holds and/or restraining devices.
Must meet appearance standards as set forth by the Sheriff.
