Job Summary

Registered Nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provide specialized care to critically ill newborns and premature infants. They monitor vital signs, administer medications, manage sophisticated medical equipment, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best possible outcomes for these vulnerable patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct care to critically ill neonates and premature infants.
  • Monitor and assess the patient's condition, including vital signs, intake/output, and neurological status.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and blood products as prescribed.
  • Operate and manage specialized medical equipment such as ventilators, incubators, and phototherapy units.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations.
  • Document patient care activities accurately and comprehensively.
  • Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Educate and support parents regarding their newborn's condition and care plan.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
Schedule / Shift
  • Typically includes 12-hour shifts.
  • May involve rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Required Qualifications
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Valid RN license in the state of practice.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
  • At least 1-2 years of recent Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience.
Certifications
  • BLS
  • NRP
Experience
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of current NICU nursing experience required.
Skills
  • Proficient in critical care nursing for neonates.
  • Ability to operate NICU-specific equipment (e.g., ventilators, incubators).
  • Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
EMR / Systems
  • Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems is generally required.
Patient Population
  • Critically ill newborns and premature infants.
Unit / Specialty
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Floating / On-Call
  • Willingness to float to other related units may be required.
  • On-call responsibilities may be assigned based on facility needs.
