Long Term Substitute - Middle School Science

Galvin Middle School is seeking an exceptional and dynamic candidate to serve as the Long Term Science Substitute from August 31, 2026 through at least November 25, 2026.

The position is part of a vibrant and supportive team that places a high priority on collaboration, creativity, flexibility, and commitment to the goals of the District and to our students, families, and staff.

Job Summary

Teachers provide a well‑organized, academically challenging, culturally and linguistically responsive class environment in which students can access curriculum and make progress toward Massachusetts standards while developing social and emotional skills for participation in society, and in a safe, supportive, and welcoming educational environment.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences that meet the needs of all learners
  • Develop lesson plans that align with state standards and district‑determined high‑quality instructional curricula and are culturally and linguistically responsive
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
  • Continuously engage in reflective practice regarding curricula, instruction, and culturally responsive practices
  • Create a culturally and linguistically responsive classroom environment
  • Build strong relationships with students to create a culture of belonging
  • Prepare the classroom for class activities
  • Incorporate a variety of culturally and linguistically responsive learning materials and resources for use in educational activities
  • Identify, select, and implement differentiated instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs based on data
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment aligned to the District approved curriculum and/or Massachusetts State Standards
  • Use relevant technology to support instruction
  • Follow and implement individual student safety plans, IEPs, 504s, health care plans, behavior support plans, etc.
  • Observe and evaluate students’ performance and development using data; use data to drive decisions and adapt instruction, assessments, and assignments as appropriate
  • Provide appropriate feedback on assessments and/or student work
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students using data
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress, development, and attendance as appropriate
  • Support the social and emotional well‑being of students during the school day
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom and school by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures in accordance with the student handbook
  • Participate in department and school meetings, parent/guardian meetings
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents/guardians regarding student progress and student needs
  • Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources, and methods, and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
  • Collaborate with student services staff, special educators, and other related service providers
  • Perform other duties specifically articulated within the collective bargaining agreement as assigned by the building principal and/or District administration
Qualifications
  • Maintain valid Massachusetts DESE teacher certification appropriate for the grade level and subject area (Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university)
  • Highly qualified as per Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)
