Part-time Academic Counselor, Latch Academic Support Program

Massasoit Community College takes pride in its long-standing tradition of excellence and its historic mission to welcome all who seek to learn. The College offers more than 60 associate degree and certificate programs across the arts, sciences, applied sciences, healthcare, and technology. In addition, Massasoit provides non-credit workforce development certificates, corporate training opportunities, adult basic education, and personal enrichment courses. Each year, the College welcomes a diverse body of new and returning students, including high school students seeking to earn college credit through dual enrollment partnerships.

More than half of Massasoit's students identify as students of color, and more than half are first generation to attend college. Approximately 700 students annually earn an associate degree or certificate, advancing their educational and career goals. Located in Brockton, Massachusetts - a vibrant and diverse city of approximately 105,000 residents - Massasoit's main campus reflects and celebrates the community it serves.

The College also operates a campus in Canton, a satellite location in Middleborough, and serves students from more than 45 cities and towns across southeastern Massachusetts.

The Latch program is a first-year support and learning community. It serves a diverse population of about 185 students per semester who are looking for support as they transition into college and develop their reading, writing, mathematics, and other academic skills. For over 50 years, Latch's community approach to education has helped students establish successful independent learning strategies and set realistic academic and career goals.

The Latch program primarily serves students who have placed into one or more developmental courses, have had unsatisfactory academic experiences in the past, and/or have been away from school for a long time. Many of Latch's students are low-income students, first-generation students, students with disabilities, and non-traditional students. This position primarily supports Latch program students at Massasoit's Canton campus.

The PT Academic Counselor holistically supports and guides program participants through their experience at the college. This position is responsible for working with an assigned caseload of students to help them develop academic and career goals and ensure that their programs of study align with those goals. They will provide academic advising, career counseling, and referral services that support students seeking to earn their certificate and/or degree, as well as to transfer to four-year institutions.

The PT Academic Counselor will collaborate with other advising programs and offices. This position involves some travel between Massasoit's Brockton and Canton campuses.

• Conducts academic and career advising, career assessments, and transfer; advising; provides information regarding degree and transfer requirements; and monitors academic progress of Latch Program students;
• Screens, interviews, evaluates, and processes potential Latch students;
• Works with students to develop academic plans of study and advises students on their academic plan, course selection/sequencing, curriculum/concentration selection and changes, and transition issues;
• Assists students in registering, adding, or withdrawing from courses;
• Assists students in obtaining developmental and tutorial assistance;
• Coordinates activities with other programs and refers students to other services as appropriate;
• Collects, organizes, and disseminates statistical data and maintains and updates student files in accordance with program reporting requirements;
• Maintains professional knowledge in applicable areas, researches new trends, and advances in the profession;
• Establishes and maintains working relationships with college faculty and staff;
• Focuses on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions;
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or closely related field; with three (3) year's experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
