The Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children is accepting applications for a Power Plant Supervisor, 2nd Class. In this leadership role, you will oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of high-pressure boilers, HVAC systems, and auxiliary equipment while guiding a skilled maintenance team, coordinating daily operations, and responding to facility emergencies to maintain uninterrupted services.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

* Supervises the operation of a high-pressure steam power plant.

* Evaluates the maintenance and repair needs of power plant equipment.

* Evaluates the maintenance and repair needs of power plant equipment.

* Develops and implements work schedules to ensure 24-hour coverage of plant operations.

* Read, record and monitor various gauges, instruments, and charts for proper operation of a steam power plant, on a continuous basis.

* Place boilers, turbine and electrical pumps, generators and other auxiliary equipment in and out of service as needed by plant demand.

* Respond, on a 24-hour schedule, to any plant emergencies that occur.

* Responds to telephone calls of every nature as needed to resolve power plant/engineering- related problems that may arise.

* Start emergency generators during power failure if automatic system fails.

* Assign cleaning assignments in plant as required in standing/order book. Assign preventative maintenance.

* Assists the Director of Facilities Management to perform assigned projects including, but not limited to energy conservation, capital planning, bids and specifications and other tasks determined by the Director or his/her designee.

Required Qualifications:

* Knowledge of the principles of operation of industrial type heating systems.

* Knowledge of the types and uses of industrial type heating systems.

* Knowledge of the principles of pneumatics as applied to heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems.

* Knowledge of the types and uses of pneumatic controls used in power plant operations.

* Knowledge of calibration and/or adjustment techniques as applied to pneumatic control systems.

* Knowledge of the types and uses of precision measuring equipment used in a power plant such as manometers, voltmeters, anemometers, tachometers, etc.

* Knowledge of the principles of operation of internal combustion engines.

* Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in power plants.

* Knowledge of the types and uses of high- and low-pressure boilers.

* Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in firing and operating high or low-pressure coal or oil-fired boilers and their auxiliary equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Experience supervising the operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam power plants in a healthcare, institutional, or industrial setting.

* Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC systems, boilers, generators, pumps, and other central utility plant equipment.

* Experience leading maintenance personnel, assigning work, and coordinating 24/7 facility operations.

* Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills with the ability to respond effectively to equipment failures and emergency situations.

* Experience developing preventive maintenance programs and coordinating maintenance schedules to maximize equipment reliability.

* Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, engineering drawings, and equipment specifications.

* Knowledge of applicable safety regulations, building codes, and best practices related to power plant and mechanical system operations.

* Strong organizational, communication, and project coordination skills, with experience supporting capital improvement or energy conservation initiatives.

* Commitment to maintaining a safe, efficient, and customer-focused environment while collaborating effectively with facilities management and other departments.
