The hours after 2:30 p.m. are not filler. They are where we win.
Most schools treat after-school as supervision. We treat it as the second half of the school day — the part where a scholar who almost got it finally gets it, and the part where a scholar who already got it goes further than the grade level allows.
Here is the proof it works: 88% of our 3rd graders passed the Mississippi ELA reading assessment on their first attempt, more than 10 points above the state average. We hold the highest 3rd grade reading scores of any charter school in Mississippi.
That did not happen by accident, and it didn't happen only between 7:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
SR1 College Preparatory & STEM Academy is hiring Literacy & STEM Educators for out-of-school time — K–4 scholars, in Canton.
What you'll do:- Build readers — small-group, high-dosage literacy instruction aligned to the science of reading and to what our scholars' daytime data actually says they need
- Braid literacy and STEM — scholars read to investigate, write to explain, argue from evidence, and present what they built
- Teach to SR1 standards — above the state floor, college preparatory and STEM-themed by design
- Innovate, don't recycle the school day — if the standard approach isn't moving a scholar, invent one that does
- Look at the data to see what's working, and change what isn't Close the loop with day teachers so the after-school hour and the school-day hour say the same thing
- Visible passion — scholars and families can tell in five minutes whether an adult wants to be there, and so can we
- Mississippi teaching certification — held, in progress, or an alternate route you're ready to start. Preferred, not required.
- Bachelor's degree in education, a STEM discipline, English or literacy — or demonstrated expertise with elementary-age children. Current college students encouraged to apply.
- Strength in literacy or STEM, and willingness to grow in the other
- A startup, entrepreneurial mindset — we're a school in year four, and some of what you need doesn't exist yet
- A willingness to be measured — you'd rather see an uncomfortable number early than a comfortable assumption all year
- Certified and current teachers wanting meaningful additional hours — not babysitting duty Newly retired educators who still have their best teaching in them
- Reading interventionists, literacy specialists, and paraprofessionals who know how to move a struggling reader
- STEM professionals and engineers who want to put real expertise in front of children who rarely see it up close
- College students and career-changers who want a real on-ramp — we'll support your certification pathway
Extended Day, Tuesday–Thursday, 2:30–5:30 PM. Saturday Academy and Summer 2027 are additional paid opportunities — and educators hired this year get first consideration for summer curriculum design roles.
Fair warning: we are highly selective. The community we serve has been handed good enough too many times, and we're not going to be one more example of it.
SR1 CPSA is Mississippi's first and only STEM-focused college preparatory public charter school — tuition-free and part of SR1's cradle-to-career pipeline. SR1 is an award-winning organization: in 2024, SR1 Scientific Research was named one of only 13 organizations in the nation as a Champion of the U.S. Department of Education's Engage Every Student Recognition Program.
