Job Summary

Assist journeyman in the planning, layout, installation, testing and repair of all aspects of substation construction in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, assemble and install electrical conduits, cable and duct banks; hand dig ditches and holes; install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays and circuit‑breaker panels, grounding leads and pull wires through conduit.
  • Work with high and low voltage systems; help test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety; use testing instruments such as ohmmeter, battery, buzzer, oscilloscope.
  • Rig and set large high voltage equipment, hang protective grounds, layout makeup and install wire jumpers; may utilize equipment to excavate foundations, layout and install ground grid; spread rock; operate man lift in tight areas in an energized substation.
  • Install all other related items in accordance with applicable plans and specifications.
  • Participate in all safety related processes and programs; engage with work team to achieve zero injuries; use stop‑work authority when necessary; report all accidents and near misses; participate in investigations.
  • Conduct pre‑job work planning and safety discussions; identify hazards and take corrective action; follow lockout/tag‑out procedures; attend site specific training and follow all procedures outlined.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication; coordinate work with other crafts; actively participate in on‑the‑job training and mentoring.
  • Produce quality work meeting plans, specifications and industry standards; read and understand plans and specifications; visualize drawings in three dimensions.
  • Assist journeymen in laying out work; learn to perform layout independently; observe functioning of installed equipment to determine hazards; perform corrective actions and report issues.
  • If certified to operate equipment, ensure it is correctly operated, maintained, in good working order and complete daily equipment inspections.
  • Comply with company code of conduct and jobsite policies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NCCER Construction Craft Laborer NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience working on substations or as an electrician or similar craft as a helper or laborer, with basic knowledge of the substation field of work. Developing knowledge of the construction, testing, maintenance, and repair of substations. Ability to understand and follow directions. Must have all necessary tools (see Substation Helper Tool List). Must be at least 18 years of age. All applicants must be able to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (e.g., criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search).

Certifications
  • NCCER Construction Craft Laborer NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program.
Work Environment / Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas.
  • Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with requirements of the job duties.
  • Requires using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls according to a set procedure.
  • Requires repetitive movement.
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders and scaffolds.
  • Work up to a 12‑hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outdoor conditions.

Typical construction site environment; working in cramped spaces and awkward positions; extremely hot or cold temperatures and exposure to inclement weather; bright or inadequate lighting; noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable; hazardous equipment; safety‑sensitive position.
