Research Foundation Position
TITLE:
Academic Counselor, TRiO
DEPARTMENT:
TRiO Student Support Services
SALARY RANGE:
$35,000 - $45,000
Description of Duties
The Academic Advisor for TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) provides holistic academic, career, and financial literacy advising to students who are low-income, first-generation, and/or have documented disabilities. This role supports student success, retention, and timely graduation by delivering individualized advising, monitoring academic progress, and connecting students to essential campus resources.
Responsibilities
* Recruit, assess, and select eligible TRiO SSS participants.
* Provide individualized academic advising, including course selection, degree planning, major exploration, and transfer preparation.
* Meet regularly with students needing academic recovery or additional academic support.
* Develop and monitor personalized Education Action Plans.
* Track student progress using Roo Success, midterm reviews, SOT, and SAP systems.
* Maintain accurate and compliant student records aligned with federal TRIO SSS guidelines.
* Provide guidance on FAFSA completion, financial aid processes, budgeting, and financial literacy.
* Support career exploration, graduate school planning, resume development, and job readiness preparation.
* Assist with cultural, educational, and enrichment activity planning.
* Participate in TRIO-related trainings, conferences, and assessment activities.
Qualifications
Required:
* Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related field.
* 1-2 years of experience in academic support, advising, tutoring, mentoring, or related services.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
* Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and work collaboratively.
Preferred:
* Master's degree or 2-5 years of advising experience.
* Experience supporting first-generation, low-income, or students with disabilities.
* Prior TRIO program experience.
* Experience supporting liberal arts/humanities coursework.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Knowledge of academic policies, student development, and financial aid processes.
* Understanding of barriers affecting TRIO-eligible students.
* Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
* Ability to motivate and coach learners.
* Proficiency with learning management and student success systems.
Prior to a final offer of employment, the selected candidate will be required to submit to a background check including, but not limited to, employment verification, educational and other credential verification, and criminal background check.
