Salary Range and Benefits
Salary Range: $18.82-$24.34 per hour (+$10-$20/hour in benefits). Step salaries:
Step 1 $ 18.82;
Step 2 $ 19.92;

General Statement of DutiesPerforms all types of general unskilled manual work.
Distinguishing Features of the ClassThis is routine work consisting of unskilled manual tasks. The duties require ability to do heavy physical labor efficiently. Works under supervisors who lay out the details of each specific assignment and constantly check the work in process and upon completion.
Examples of Work- Cleans, by hand, gutters, culverts, sewers and other drainage structures.
- Loads and unloads: stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber, heavy mechanical equipment and other materials.
- Fells, cuts up and loads trees and limbs.
- Involves cold patching by shoveling and tamping hot mix.
- Assists in semi-skilled work such as plumbing, carpentry, painting (basic, non-specialized), installing signs, marking pavement, auto repair, electrical or concrete work.
- Shovels snow.
- Mows grass (by hand or power equipment, including tractors up to 20 H.P. operated on City property).
- Performs a variety of heavy manual work in the maintenance and construction of sidewalks, streets, sewers, water mains, parks and other City infrastructure including laying bricks, cleaning and rodding of sewers, digging post holes and setting posts.
- May operate light equipment or vehicles as an auxiliary function (e.g., pickup truck, floor sweeper, forklift).
- Other related duties, not listed, but consistent with the above examples may also be required.
- May assist with collections at the Recycling Center.
Skills and Abilities
Willingness to perform routine manual work; ability to lift heavy articles; stamina; excellent physical condition; ability to understand simple oral instructions; preferably to read and write.
Experience and TrainingPreferably some experience in heavy manual labor. A High School Diploma/GED is required. Possession of a valid Ohio driver's license.
Examination DetailsSubsequent to the filing of the application, candidates will be notified of the format, location, date, and time of the examination. The exam will cover the following subject areas: tool knowledge, safety, math, science, reading comprehension, public relations, maintenance, word knowledge, and other related areas.
Repeating an ExamPer OAC Rule 123: 1-9-01, an applicant who has competed in a civil service examination cannot repeat that examination or take an examination for the same classification within four months from the date of original examination, unless an alternative form of examination is given, or unless other standards are specified in the examination announcement.
RatingYour name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates upon receiving a passing score. Once the list is established, your name will remain on the list for one year.
