The Role The Accounting & Business Manager sits at the intersection of nonprofit accounting, construction job-costing, and mortgage loan servicing, safeguarding the financial integrity that makes this organization's affordable home ownership model possible. This is a hands-on, full P&L ownership role reporting directly to the CEO, with regular participation in Board-level financial reporting. Primary Responsibilities Strategic Financial Leadership Partner with the CEO and leadership team to align financial strategy across the organization Prepare and present financial reporting to the Board of Directors Serve as primary liaison for banking, insurance, and risk management relationships Financial Operations & Mortgage Stewardship Oversee construction accounting, job-costing, and mortgage-related financial activity Direct daily accounting functions: AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger maintenance Manage cash flow, income, and expenses to ensure organizational stability Oversee mortgage loan servicing to protect the integrity of the affordable mortgage program Oversee payroll and benefits/retirement plan administration in partnership with HR Build and monitor departmental and organizational budgets (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) Compliance, Audit & Grant Management Maintain internal controls and GAAP compliance Lead the annual independent audit and Form 990 tax filing Support grant/public funding audits and monitoring Team Leadership Directly supervise a small accounting team (controller, accounting clerk, mortgage clerk) covering donation receivables, AR, AP, mortgage management, and HR-adjacent functions Coach and develop team members, adapting leadership style to individual strengths Requirements Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field (or equivalent experience) Proven transactional and supervisory accounting experience
Experience with construction, job-cost, inventory, mortgage, or program-based accounting Prior audit coordination experience Proficiency with automated accounting systems and Microsoft 365 Sage 50 nonprofit accounting experience preferred but not required Nonprofit/grant accounting and compliance experience preferred Clean criminal record required Key Skills General ledger transactional expertise Strong analytical judgment and financial integrity Highly detail-oriented with strong multitasking/deadline management Ability to translate financial data for non-financial stakeholders Proactive, process-improvement mindset Interested in hearing more?
