Job Description

Harter Elementary School seeks two Autism Spectrum Classroom Assistants to support students with autism in a classroom setting. The role involves providing direct care, assisting with routines, supporting instructional activities, maintaining a safe environment, and collaborating with teachers and staff.

Requirements – Must Have
  • 2- or 4-year degree, preferably in education, medical, or psychological area of study.
  • Appropriate Ohio Department of Education permit or licensure.
  • Ability to work effectively with classroom teachers, staff, and families.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Completion of training in autism methodologies and district-approved restraint and seclusion training.
  • Physical ability to perform duties that may be physically demanding.
  • Understanding that exhibited behaviors are associated with a disability.
  • Teamwork skills working with teachers and related service providers.
Desirable – Preferred
  • Experience with environmental supports ensuring structure and routine.
  • Experience with visual supports to aid attention, comprehension, and independence.
  • Experience with sensory supports to improve processing of information.
  • Experience with communication supports for diverse student needs.
  • Experience with behavior supports that address students’ intentions.
  • Knowledge of treatments and methodologies for educating children with autism.
Responsibilities
  • Work with students with autism.
  • Attend trainings and seminars.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain a safe environment with district-approved protocols related to positive behavior supports and safety restraint techniques.
  • Assist with wash‑up, lunch, toilet routines and general care of students.
  • Lift students and change diapers as needed.
  • Maintain records and perform clerical duties assigned by the teacher.
  • Supervise students during all activities including drills, assemblies, recess, and field trips.
  • Assist in care, maintenance, and ordering of classroom equipment.
  • Help students master equipment used for instruction.
  • Use communication strategies and program tools for non‑verbal students.
  • Administer, score, and record achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher.
  • Reinforce learning of material or skills.
  • Utilize sensory techniques for calming or sensory breaks.
  • Participate in the IEP and ETR process as appropriate.
  • Assist students in inclusion settings.
  • Alert the teacher to any problems or special information about an individual student.
  • Serve as primary information source for substitute teachers in the teacher’s absence.
  • Use 21st Century technology skills such as email, iPad, and Microsoft Office.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Principal.
Eligibility

The positions all require applicants to be Highly Qualified – defined as two years of college (48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours), an associate’s degree, or passing the Praxis Paraprofessional Assessment Exam. Applicants must submit proof of Praxis results or college transcripts and a valid Educational Aide Permit (or obtain one immediately).
