PURPOSE OF POSITION
Patient Care Technician will provide support to the patient care team by performing direct patient care under the direction of a registered nurse. PCT will provide assistance, collect specimens, and perform limited tests per provider order according to established policy, procedures and training.
QUALIFICATIONS- High school graduate.
- AHA healthcare provider training is required (BLS).
- Adheres to the hospital attendance policy and will make every effort to consistently be punctual when reporting to work and during daily activities.
- Basic computer skills are required.
Under the direction of a registered nurse, the PCT will support other direct caregivers, perform activities of daily living, and document in the patients’ medical record.
Activities of daily living include but are not limited to:
- Ambulation
- Bedpans-toileting
- Positioning/turns/skin care
- Incontinence
- Meal intake %
- Empties Foleys
- Transfers to chair/log roll
- Pass water
- Oral care
- Maintaining safety
- Heights and weights
- JP/NG drain care
- Ostomy care
- Feeds
- Answer call lights
- Baths/showers
- I&O’s
- Vital signs
- Catheter care
- Preventative foam dressing
- Change linen and perform other special housekeeping duties as directed. Distributes clean linen and collect dirty linen.
- Transport monitored and non-monitored assigned patients throughout all areas of the hospital as directed. Assists with patient transfers and discharges, including removal of equipment from patient rooms post-discharge.
- Assists patient with menu completion. Delivers nourishment to assigned patient; provide water, ice, and between meal dietary needs; clean and maintain patient refrigerator and update refrigerator temperature log, as assigned.
- Clean equipment, utility rooms, and stocks rooms.
- Collect specimens and obtain blood glucose according to established policy and procedure and provider orders. Arrange for transport of specimens to laboratory as appropriate.
- Performs EKGs, removal of Foley catheters, and bladder scans under the guidance of a registered nurse.
- Place patient on monitor telemetry leads.
- Apply external devices (such as SCD's, Pulse Oximetry, TPump, etc.) per provider order.
- Maintain safety initiatives including but not limited to hourly rounding, answering lights, monitoring patients who are at high risk for falls, and provide 1:1 bedside companionship for patients as indicated.
- Ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations.
- Conveys an attitude of understanding, trust, and compassion for individuals.

- Commits to treating coworkers with respect and dignity and will follow our non-negotiable standards to promote a consistent positive experience for patients, colleagues, and visitors.
- Documents care provided in the patients’ medical record.
- If applicable to the clinical unit, will demonstrate Monitor Transport Technician competency within the first 4-6 months and then annually after the initial completion. The first 365 days requires demonstration of competency 3 times.
- Complete house-wide mandatory education and maintains Basic Life Support Certification and any licensure if applicable.
- Adheres to the hospital attendance policy and will be punctual when reporting to work and during daily activities.
- Basic computer skills.
- Good communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS- Working hours vary according to departmental needs.
- Works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
- Lunch periods will be assigned by the Charge registered nurse.
- Requires full range of body motion which may include handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- May require exposure to communicable disease, body fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and other potentially hazardous conditions common to a clinical environment, such as risk of falls, strains, etc.
- Patient Care Technicians will be working weekend and holiday rotation and varied shifts per clinical unit area.
