HOURS:

Forty hours per week with possible emergency situationsA medical assistant in an outpatient behavioral health agency supports psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and clinical staff by managing patient intake, coordinating psychiatric care, and handling clinic administration to ensure safe, trauma-informed patient flow.

Clinical Responsibilities Patient Intake & Vitals:
Measure and record weight, blood pressure, pulse, and general wellness indicators.

Screenings & History:
Administer and document standard mental health rating scales and gather updated medication lists.

Medication & Treatment Support:
Manage psychiatric medication samples, administer injections if certified, and monitor patients during specialized treatments like Spravato (esketamine) sessions.

Laboratory & Testing Coordination:
Submit lab orders, track results, and coordinate pharmacogenetic testing

Administrative & Care Coordination Prior Authorizations:
Process insurance prior to authorizations for psychiatric medications.

Referral Management:
Coordinate care plans and outside referrals with primary care providers, therapists, and intensive outpatient programs (IOP).Records & Reporting:
Maintain accurate charts in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and run state database checks (like OARRS) when requested by providers. Patient Communication:
Handle phone triage, manage portal messages, and follow up on missed appointments to support care continuity.

Qualifications & Skills Education & Certification:
High school diploma required; completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program with CMA, RMA, or CCMA certification preferred.

Core Competencies:

Strong knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA compliance, and basic pharmacology.

Soft Skills:

High empathy, de-escalation awareness, patience, and clear communication when interacting with vulnerable populations.
