Position Highlights

This position supports patients and teams across Avera Cancer Institute locations in South Dakota. Primary duties are in infusion, with additional clinic coverage. Travel between sites (Mitchell, Yankton, Pierre, Aberdeen, Sioux Falls) may be required. The primary location will be the Avera Cancer Institute closest to the applicant’s home address.

Overview

Delivers nursing care by developing a nursing diagnosis; establishing nursing care objectives; defining nursing interventions; and providing physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, families, and friends. Ensures patients understand their conditions, medications, and self‑care skills and documents changes in conditions and needs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care by reviewing physician prescriptions and communicating the nursing care plan to the health care team.
  • Coordinate with other healthcare providers and provide physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual support.
  • Develop nursing care plans by obtaining medical histories, examining patients, and documenting physical condition and psychological status.
  • Conferring with family and friends to establish nursing diagnosis, objectives, and interventions.
  • Teach patients and families to understand condition, medications, and self‑care skills; answer questions and provide resources.
  • Evaluate patient care by adhering to therapeutic standards and measuring outcomes against care objectives.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy environment by following infection‑control policies, medication administration protocols, controlled substance regulations, and legal requirements.
  • Document patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
  • Keep patient care equipment operating by following instructions, troubleshooting, and performing maintenance.
  • Maintain supplies by checking stock, anticipating needs, placing orders, and verifying receipt.
Essential Qualifications
  • Must be able to work the specified hours and perform essential job functions satisfactorily.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to perform position duties.
  • Effective communication skills, including hearing, understanding, and distinguishing speech and other sounds.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience
  • Registered Nurse (RN) – Board of Nursing. Active license in the state of practice.
  • Upon hire and within 1 year: ONS Fundamentals Provider Card – Oncology Nursing Society.
  • Within 1 year: ONS Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Provider Card – Oncology Nursing Society.
Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience
  • Previous oncology experience.
