Aboutthe Role
Journeyman electricians are responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems. They work with blueprints to figure out how the systems are supposed to work. Then, they use that information to troubleshoot electrical problems and come up with solutions for them. A journeyman electrician needs to have a deep familiarity with various types of electrical systems, fixtures, and components.
They have to be able to repair electrical uses with a variety of tools and techniques. Their work also requires them to follow OSHA safety requirements and to safely use ladders, scaffolding, and platforms.
- Install new electrical systems, including wiring, circuit breakers, transformers, lighting, and appliances, in compliance with technical drawings and building codes.
- PLC Troubleshooting within the organization.
- Perform routine maintenance and inspections on electrical systems to prevent issues and ensure proper functioning.
- Analyses drawings and wiring diagrams to install circuits and equipment and to determine the need for and method of repair or replacement.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot problems in electrical circuits and equipment, making necessary repairs to restore functionality.
- Ensure all work adheres to local and national safety standards, including OSHA requirements, and understand electrical code specifications.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics to understand system requirements and plan work
- Plans working procedure; considers all safety precautions and the proper isolation of circuits to cause minimum interference to operations. Determines necessary tools and materials.
- Locates sources of electrical troubles by tracing and testing circuits for faulty operation.
- Dismantles, inspects, repairs, adjusts or replaces parts and wiring on motors, generators, distribution and control panels, circuit breakers, rectifiers, electronic devices, meters, etc. Installs or re-assembles and tests and adjusts equipment for safe and proper operation. Performs work on hot lines when required.
- In emergencies, shuts out defective coils in order to get equipment back in operation. Changes DC motor characteristics by shunting series coils, etc.
- Fabricates parts as required, using shop machine and hand tools.
- Starts and stops air compressors. Alternates water pumps on induction furnaces.
- Help coach, mentor and train apprentices that are training to become Electricians in the organization’s Learner Program
- Working with High voltage (69,000v) including 480v 3 Phase
- PLC based drive and motors knowledge

- Primarily lift a weight of 25-50 lbs on an occasional basis per hour from floor to waist and waist to overhead but could be required to lift up to 50# frequently and 75-100 # on a rare occasion
- Wear proper PPE / Safety equipment such as Hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes
- Use of all basic hand and power tools, ladders, manuals, prints, dolly, mills, lathes, welder, welding gloves/hood/sleeves, fire resistant jacket, 60 to 80-foot lift, harness, lanyards, etc. This list is not all-inclusive
- Work in Foundry and machine shop environment. Awareness of other employees while moving overhead cranes in the vicinity. Exposed to ambient temperatures outdoors year-round
- Work irregular hours, weekends, overtime and holidays as required
