Operates trucks and other light‑heavy, mechanical construction equipment. Performs manual labor as necessary, and all work as designated by a supervisor.
Distinguishing Features Of The ClassCan operate all vehicles and equipment as specified for a Utility Operator 2/Semiskilled Laborer, plus roller, sweeper, tandem, flusher and loader.
Examples Of WorkDrives trucks for all varieties of construction, cleanup, and other city maintenance operations; handles and moves materials for storage, maintenance or construction. Is involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of city facilities and infrastructure. Performs any duties of a Utility Operator 2/Semiskilled Laborer. May direct a crew to which they are assigned unless a supervisor is present. Other related duties, not listed, but consistent with and similar in nature to the above examples may also be required.
RequiredKnowledge, Skills, And Abilities
A knowledge of all types of public works construction, maintenance, and repair work. A full knowledge of the city streets is necessary. Ability to follow oral and written instructions; must be in good physical condition and maintain a good attendance record; must be able to deal tactfully with the public when the need arises; must be able to drive a truck and operate various light to heavy equipment;
ability to make minor repairs and adjustments when needed. Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License
, with the Tank Endorsement
, at all times.
Training within the City or experience with a private contractor, or other combination of knowledge, training, and experience which provides the necessary skills is acceptable. Must be a thoroughly experienced truck driver with a good background in construction equipment.
Important Notice To VeteransAs provided in ORC 124.23C, any person who has completed service in the uniformed services, who has been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is an Ohio resident and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than 180 days of active duty service pursuant to an executive order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress of the United States may file with the director a certificate of service or honorable discharge (DD-214 – Long version), and upon this filing, the person shall receive an additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member’s initial entry‑level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.

Additional Qualifications/ResponsibilitiesThis is an open examination. To be eligible under this position all applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D., must possess a valid commercial driver's license Class A with Tank Endorsement, must be a U.S. Citizen or have a permanent resident card and be at least 18 years of age.
