Position: LIFT STATION MECHANIC TRAINEE

Job Summary:

H105. The candidate selected will start at the beginning of the pay range ($18.63 per hour).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assist in performing daily inspections, maintenance, cleaning, and repair of lift stations, sewage grit removal equipment, sewage grinding equipment, sewage screening equipment, including pulling and replacing pumps, repairing and replacing pipe, valves, and fittings, and operating and maintaining lift stations and associated properties.
  • Assist in basic troubleshooting of pumps treatment/process equipment to identify and correct problems.
  • Communicate with assigned Lift Station Mechanic regarding needed repairs and maintenance.
  • Connect and operate portable pumps and generators.
  • Maintain lift station properties with lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Clean sewage spills and apply chemicals as required per federal, state, and local laws.
  • Respond to emergency and trouble calls, locate cause, and perform corrective actions.
  • Execute all assigned duties efficiently and timely.
  • Operate light and heavy‑weight trucks, boom trucks, heavy‑lifting equipment, portable pumping equipment, power generation equipment, lawn maintenance equipment, and various tools.
  • Maintain and ensure assigned equipment and tools remain in proper working order.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair work independently.
  • Stock frequently used parts and supplies on assigned truck.
  • Work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, and during weather events as scheduled or needed.

All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical training desirable.
  • One year of experience in a mechanical field, preferably in the wastewater industry.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass background, motor vehicle, reference checks, drug screening, and post‑job offer physicals.
  • Excellent attendance record.
LICENCES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a Level III Wastewater Collections License from FWPCOA within 12 months of hire.
  • Within 12 months:
    Class A CDL driver’s licence with tanker endorsement.
  • Within 24 months:
    Completion of required coursework and possession of Wastewater Collection Technician Class C Certification issued by FWPCOA.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires sitting, standing, walking, using hands and fingers, handling, reaching with arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting or moving up to 100 pounds. Regular exposure to unpleasant conditions, raw sewage, chemicals, electrical shock risk, vibration, and the use of machinery and power tools. Working environment may be moderately quiet but can become loud.

Disaster team duties: available to work before, during, and after any disaster as directed.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Portable pumps, portable generators, power and hand tools, hydraulic boom truck, light and heavy trucks, other motorized equipment, lawn equipment, sewage processing and lift station equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY

Knowledge of generators, pumps, gear boxes, and gear drives; tools, methods, materials, and techniques of an equipment/lift station mechanic; operation of hand and power tools and lawn equipment; occupational hazards and safety precautions; basic mathematics.

Skill in teamwork, use of tools and equipment, efficient cost‑effective maintenance, and repair tasks.

Ability to read and understand manuals and specifications, follow oral and written instructions, and perform basic mathematical calculations.

Ability to use hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, boom trucks, and other equipment for maintenance activities; perform basic maintenance on tools and equipment; operate motor vehicles.
