Industrial I/E Technician

JOB SUMMARY:

This is an entry-level job in the IE Tech classification series. Work is performed as a trainee and under close supervision and according to standardized instructions and procedures. Assists higher classified technicians in performing electrical and instrumentation maintenance activities and projects. Assists in the fabrication, installation, inspection, testing, adjustment, and repair of electronic, electro-mechanical, and pneumatic control circuits and systems. These systems are used to record, indicate, and control the operation of various machines, including process measurement and control instrumentation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists and learns how to fabricate, install, check, and repair electrical equipment and instrumentation systems, such as general power circuits (single and 3-phase at voltages from 120 to 13,600v), pump controls and circuitry, flow pressure and weight measuring systems, monitoring and control instrumentation including programmable logic controllers (PLC) and radio-transmitted supervisory control, and data acquisition systems (SCADA). Helps install, maintain, and repair industrial and electrical control systems, power distribution systems, and high and low voltage switching systems and equipment.

Helps install, maintain, and repair electric motors (AC and DC), motor control devices, variable frequency drives (VFD), DC drives, and magnetic drives. Responds to emergency and trouble calls, locates and identifies the cause, and performs corrective actions as required. All other duties as assigned.

Senior Industrial I/E Technician

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs work of significant complexity and difficulty in the accomplishment of industrial electrical and instrumentation construction and maintenance activities. Designs, fabricates, installs, inspects, tests, adjusts, and repairs electrical, electronic, electromechanical, and pneumatic control circuits and systems used to record, indicate, and control the operation of various machines and systems including process measurement and control instrumentation at an industrial process facility.

Serves as a lead worker or directs the work activities of other skilled technical or general maintenance personnel. Work is performed under general direction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Designs electrical equipment and instrumentation systems, such as general power circuits (DC and AC single and 3-phase at voltages from 0-13,600V or 15KV), complex pump controls and circuitry, flow pressure and weight measuring systems, monitoring and control instrumentation including programmable logic controllers (PLC) and radio-transmitted supervisory control, and/or data acquisition systems (SCADA). Performs periodic scheduled maintenance and calibration of electric and electronic equipment.

Tests, repairs, and calibrates various meters, gauges, controllers, and switching devices and alarm systems. Responds to trouble calls, locates and identifies the nature and cause of the problem, and takes corrective action. Installs, repairs, and maintains telephones and telemetry units and systems, including radios and antennas. Programs and configures microprocessor-based instruments. Instructs and trains lower-level personnel on the accomplishment of more complicated tasks and projects.

Maintains files of drawings, schematics, manufacturer's drawings, and related manuals. Oversees and inspects work performed by outside contractors. Purchases necessary supplies and equipment for repairs and projects and reviews specifications as needed. Maintains close liaison with suppliers, service personnel, and design personnel. May be the senior technician responsible for a specified industrial area.

Minimum Qualifications

Industrial I/E Technician:
Three years of education, training, and/or experience such as: completion of vocational/technical school courses in instrumentation or electronics; or a registered apprenticeship in instrumentation, measurement and control, electronics, electrical, and/or mechanical systems; and/or progressively responsible experience in the fabrication, installation, and repair of electronic instruments and electrical control systems used in an industrial facility. Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Intermediate level of Windows and computer knowledge and skill.
