Primary Purpose

To provide the maximum educational opportunity for each student through minimizing absences due to illness, and to create a climate of health and well‑being on each campus within the district. Provide health services to students. Promote health education and preventative health practices for students under the direction and supervision of an assigned Registered Nurse. Position works 187 days.

Qualifications Education/Certification
  • Graduate of a vocational nursing education program
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid LVN license issued by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State Of Texas
  • BLS Provider Certification
  • Texas Department of Health certification to conduct vision/hearing/spinal screenings. (CISD provides)
Special Knowledge Skills
  • Ability to use personal computer and software programs and proficient in keyboard skills
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills (verbal and written)
  • Must have a desire to work with students.
  • Personality traits or skills in interpersonal relations including tact, firmness and social prudence.
Experience

One year nursing experience, preferably in community health.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Provide temporary and emergency care for all student illnesses and injuries and notifies parent/guardian when necessary.
  • Serve as a health advocate for students.
  • Perform screening procedures and record results as required by the Texas Department of Health, Texas Education Agency, and district policy. Make appropriate referrals as necessary.
  • Prepares health services reports.
  • Collaborate with other professionals regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP items)
  • Ensures proper documentation for all office visits on a daily basis.
  • Maintains BLS/CPR, vision, hearing and spinal screening certifications.
  • Gives medication to students according to State Department of Health guidelines, board policy and district procedures.
  • Provide health counseling as needed to students/staff/parents/community.
  • Notifies parents or guardians of accident or illness of students when appropriate.
  • Review, maintain and evaluate immunization records. Refer to medical providers as needed.
  • Maintains current file of students who are exempt from immunization requirements including appropriate documentation for exemption.
  • Serves as a health liaison between the school, physicians, parents, and community.
  • Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Identify student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and the medical health community as needed.
  • Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team and other school committees as necessary or as invited to attend.
  • Maintains and orders supplies necessary for campus health clinics.
  • Communicate regularly with Principal, Lead RN and Supervising RN regarding health services issues.
  • Maintains open communication with Campus Administration, Lead RN, Supervising RN, personnel and peers.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
  • Attend professional development meetings as directed.
  • Maintains confidentiality and uses professional information discreetly and judiciously in accordance with state and federal laws and district policy.
  • Supports administrative and Board policy consistently.
  • Maintains a sincere, friendly attitude toward parents, students and staff.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and staff regarding health issues.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, Texas Department of Health rule, Texas Board of Nurse Examiners, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the health services area.
  • Report employee injuries and potential health and safety hazards per district policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
    Ability to communicate effectively (verbal & written) with adults and children; maintain emotional control under stress. Exposure to bacteria, communicable diseases, and blood borne pathogens. Position requires flexibility in job assignments on a daily basis. Regular attendance is an essential function. Some lifting may be required.
