Position Summary
We are seeking a Mortgage Underwriter to join our Mortgage Lending team. This role is responsible for analyzing and evaluating residential mortgage loan applications to determine creditworthiness and compliance with investor (FNMA.FHLMC), agencies, and bank lending guidelines. The successful candidate will exercise sound judgment, maintain high-quality underwriting standards, and contribute to an outstanding customer experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review and underwrite conventional secondary market and portfolio mortgage loans.
- Analyze credit reports, income documentation, tax returns, asset verification, appraisals, and collateral documentation.
- Evaluate borrower capacity, creditworthiness, and overall risk in accordance with agency and bank guidelines.
- Make sound underwriting decisions and issue loan approvals, suspensions, or denials with supporting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, investor requirements, and internal policies.
- Review complex income calculations, including self-employed borrowers, rental income, trusts, and other non-traditional income sources.
- Communicate loan conditions and underwriting decisions clearly and timely to loan officers and processing staff.
- Package loan for sale to investors, request funding, and quality control.
- Participate in training, audits, quality control reviews, and process improvement initiatives.
Training and Support
- Serve as a resource for lenders, processors, underwriters, and operations personnel regarding secondary market regulations and pricing.
- Stay current on underwriting guidelines, regulatory changes, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum of 2-3 years of mortgage processing/compliance experience.
- Knowledge of conventional loan programs.
- Experience interpreting credit reports, tax returns, income documentation, and appraisals.
- Working knowledge of FNMA and FHLMC guidelines.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with mortgage loan origination systems and underwriting technology.

- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong understanding of mortgage compliance and regulatory requirements.
