Tax Manager (Permanent Role) About the Role

The tax manager will act as the tax subject matter expert across South Africa and broader Africa operations, ensuring robust compliance, effective management of tax audits and disputes, mitigation of risk, and high-quality tax reporting through oversight of execution activities and provision of strategic tax advisory support.

The role supports planning and business decision-making by managing multi-jurisdictional tax obligations, optimising tax outcomes, enhancing cashflow outcomes, and ensuring alignment with Group governance standards.

The Tax Manager will report to the Financial Operations Manager. This post is based in Cape Town, at the Goodwood office.

In this role, you will:
Tax compliance, audit & litigation management:
  • Review and approve corporate income tax and provisional tax filings (SA, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and other Africa markets)
  • Review VAT and indirect tax returns across jurisdictions
  • Manage tax audits, queries, disputes, and assessments with revenue authorities
  • Prepare and review responses to tax authority notices, objections, and appeals
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors and legal counsel on disputes and litigation matters
  • Monitor compliance calendar and regulatory submissions
Tax advisory, planning & commercial support:
  • Advice on business transactions and cross-border activities
  • Perform and review corporate tax calculation for South Africa and other Africa markets
  • Partner with commercial and finance teams to optimise tax outcomes
  • Interpret and apply country-specific tax legislation
  • Support structuring commercial arrangements, contracts, transactions, tax planning and forecasting processes
  • Contribute to budgeting, forecast planning, monthly/year-end closing processes with tax assumptions and impacts
  • Identify opportunities for tax efficiency and cashflow improvement
Transfer pricing & international tax:
  • Review and maintain transfer pricing documentation
  • Ensure alignment with OECD/BEPS principles
  • Support intercompany pricing policies and cross border transactions
Tax risk management & governance:
  • Identify jurisdiction-specific tax risks and exposures
  • Implement and monitor tax control frameworks
  • Track and manage tax dispute and litigation exposure
  • Ensure compliance with Group tax policies and standards
  • Support internal and external audits.

Maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders across functions and jurisdictions to support tax compliance and advisory.

Drive efficiency through process improvement and technology enablement.

Ensure effective coordination and quality oversight of tax activities across roles and jurisdictions.

Support capability development and promote knowledge sharing within Finance teams.

About You:

Essential Criteria :
  • Qualified CA (SA)
  • 3–5 years Post Qualification Experience
  • Experience in corporate and indirect tax
  • Experience in tax compliance, reporting, audits and dispute management
  • Exposure to multi-jurisdiction tax environments
  • Ability to manage and operate effectively in multi-country tax environments
  • Awareness of evolving tax legislation across Africa
  • Ability to engage with tax authorities and manage disputes
  • Ability to partner with commercial teams
  • Understanding of business drivers and financial impact
Desirable:
  • Postgraduate qualification or specialisation in tax
  • Articles completed with Big 4 namely PwC, Deloitte, EY and KPMG
  • Experience in African markets (e.g., South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia)
  • Transfer pricing exposure
  • Experience in multinational organisations
  • Publishing / media industry exposure
