The Trailer Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, servicing, maintenance, repair and safe operation of trailers, ensuring all work is completed to a high standard, within agreed time frames and in accordance with manufacturer specifications, workshop procedures and applicable safety requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Inspect, service, maintain and repair trailers and trailer components.
- Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, braking, suspension and related trailer faults.
- Carry out preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing according to required intervals.
- Work on trailer braking systems, axles, suspension, wheel-end components and associated systems.
- Inspect trailer structures, chassis, coupling equipment, lights, tyres and safety-related components.
- Conduct accurate fault-finding and identify parts and repairs required.
- Complete repairs and maintenance in accordance with manufacturer and workshop standards.
- Complete job cards, inspection sheets, time records and relevant workshop documentation accurately.
- Work closely with the Foreman, Workshop Manager, Parts Department and Service Advisors to ensure efficient workflow.
- Report additional repairs, safety concerns, repeat faults and parts requirements promptly.
- Carry out quality checks and ensure completed work is safe and fit for operation.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe work area and ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained.
- Strong knowledge of heavy-duty trailers and commercial vehicle equipment.
- Good understanding of trailer braking systems, suspension, axles and wheel-end assemblies.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and basic electrical faults effectively.
- Ability to read and follow technical information, repair procedures and workshop instructions.
- Good understanding of preventative maintenance and inspection procedures.
- Ability to use workshop tools, diagnostic equipment and specialised trailer equipment correctly.
- BPW training or experience with BPW trailer systems would be an advantage.
- Relevant trade qualification in Diesel Mechanics, Motor Mechanics, Heavy Vehicle Mechanics or a related field.
- Qualified Trailer Mechanic / Diesel Mechanic will be advantageous.
- Minimum 2–3 years' relevant experience working on trailers or heavy commercial vehicles.
- Experience with commercial trailer fleets will be advantageous.
- BPW training or certification would be an advantage.
- Valid driver's licence; heavy vehicle licence would be advantageous.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
