Job Summary
Receive donations at the store location in a courteous manner to encourage continued community support. Following established procedures, perform preliminary sorting before packing, staking, or donating. May perform duties of Store Material Handler and/or Store Processor as needed.
Essential Duties- Maintain the donation area inside the retail store; keep the area neat, clean, and organized.
- Greet donors following defined procedures; accept or reject items for donation and explain the reasons for rejection.
- Offer and/or issue a receipt to donors; record the time and nature of each donation on a daily record.
- Sort and stack donations into designated containers, ensuring items are wrapped and/or packed to prevent damage or safety hazards.
- Contact transportation with donation status; request barrels, hanger racks, and other supplies as needed.
- Assist sales staff in preparing goods for floor display.
- May perform Store Material Handler duties, including offloading donations from trucks and trailers, placing donations in designated areas, and maintaining records of offloaded materials.
- May perform Store Processor duties, including sorting and grading textile/clothing and hard‑sort items, cleaning and grading hard‑sort items, pricing items that meet quality standards, tagging items, and placing items into designated containers for transport to the sales floor.
- May perform janitorial duties as needed.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Education:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. - License/Certification:
None required. - Experience:
None required; duties can be learned through on‑the‑job training. - Knowledge:
Comfortable using material‑handling equipment and techniques; familiarity with Goodwill Central Coast’s mission and company policies (can be learned on‑the‑job). - Equipment used:
Barrels, wire cages, boxes, broom and dustpan, typical retail store equipment, and typical office equipment. - Skills and aptitudes:
- Basic oral and written English; basic Spanish preferred.
- Understanding and following packing and stacking procedures.
- Coordination of eye/hand/foot movements for safe lifting and stacking.
- Ability to adapt to fluctuating work activity and maintain self‑control while dealing with the public.
- Judgment in accepting donations and communicating decisions clearly.
- Excellent attendance as outlined in company policy.
- Adherence to safe work practices and reporting safety hazards promptly.
- Emotional effort:
The activity level fluctuates depending on donor volume; overtime may be required.
- Regular walking, standing, and carrying of items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Use of proper material‑handling equipment for items over 50 lbs.
- Standing 71–100% of the time, walking 71–100% of the time, bending 71–100%, pushing/pulling 71–100%.
- Lifting and carrying 10 lbs. or less consistently, 11–25 lbs. consistently, 26–50 lbs. consistently.
- Longest distance carried: 40 feet; heaviest item carried: 50 lbs.
- Reaching at or below shoulder level 31–70% of the time; reaching at or above shoulder level rarely.
Work is performed in an enclosed storeroom floor that is heated and ventilated. Some areas have a receiving area that is less climate‑controlled. The working surface is uniform, with dust and dirt controlled by daily cleaning. Noise and vibrations are insignificant, though radios and/or televisions may be turned on.
