Assistant Professor of Practice (Biological Sciences) – Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Full‑time, 9‑month, non‑tenure‑track appointment to assist in the delivery of curricula for degree programs in the School of Biological Sciences.
DescriptionThe School of Biological Sciences seeks an assistant professor of practice to teach high‑enrollment general biology and introductory life‑science courses, assist with seminar courses, and support upper‑level courses as needed. This role also involves coordinating curriculum with other instructors, developing laboratory exercises, maintaining office hours, and contributing to SIU’s mission of student success and retention.
Note:
Southern Illinois University cannot provide H‑1B sponsorship for applicants outside the U.S. requesting consular processing due to a $100,000 fee for such petitions.
- Teach non‑life‑science majors general biology/zoology courses (PLB 115, ZOOL 115, ZOOL 118) and introductory biology courses for life‑science majors (BIOL 213, BIOL 212).
- Assist in delivering seminar courses in Biological Sciences and Zoology (e.g., ZOOL 215).
- Potentially teach upper‑level courses with relevant disciplinary expertise.
- Coordinate curriculum with other instructors and collaborate with School of Biological Sciences staff to enhance laboratory exercises.
- Provide up to 6 hours of office hours per week.
- Maintain 24 credit hours of teaching per academic year for a 1.0 FTE appointment.
- Support student success and retention initiatives.
- Minimum:
Ph.D. in a life‑sciences discipline by date of hire. - Preferred:
Prior undergraduate teaching experience in life sciences.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience and considers internal equity. Appointment is a 1.0 FTE, 24 credit hours of teaching per academic year.
