Position: Assistant Professor (CARE)

The School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences in the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU Carbondale) is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor position. This is a full‑time, on‑campus, nine‑month, tenure‑track role within the Counseling and Rehabilitation Education (CARE) program, with an anticipated start date of August 11, 2026.

Applicants will teach graduate studies in clinical mental health and clinical rehabilitation counseling, in addition to specialty courses. The position may include practicum and internship supervision, and will require the maintenance of a record of scholarly productivity through research that leads to publications in national peer‑reviewed journals. Responsibilities also include seeking external funding, encouraging and supporting student research, supervising students in practicum and internship, advising and mentoring students, providing service to the public and to the School, College, and University, and participating in program assessment activities as described in accreditation standards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctoral degree in counselor education, preferably from a CACREP accredited program; or
  • Related doctoral degree and employment as a full‑time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013; or
  • Employment as a full‑time doctoral‑level faculty member in a CORE‑accredited master’s program prior to July 1, 2017; or
  • Graduated from a rehabilitation doctoral program prior to January 1, 2018. ABD applicants will be considered if all Ph.D. degree requirements are met by August 11, 2026.
  • Applicants must possess evidence of or the potential for scholarly research that leads to publications in nationally refereed journals.

    All applicants must obtain state of Illinois professional counseling licensure within one year from the date of appointment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Applicants who are certified rehabilitation counselors, certified alcohol and drug counselors, or licensed professional counselors are preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with post‑master’s experience in clinical mental health counseling, clinical rehabilitation counseling, substance use counseling, or a combination thereof; experience or interest in developing distance education through online/hybrid formats; and prior university teaching experience.
