Description

The Department of Biomedical Sciences, Division of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine seeks applicants for an Instructor position. The position is a term, 100% nontenure-track appointment. The purpose of this position is to provide high-quality instruction in genetics and biochemistry to first‑year medical students; facilitate problem‑based and small‑group learning; support students individually and in groups as they learn genetics and biochemistry;

and contribute to the educational mission of the SIU School of Medicine.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate commitment to the mission and behavioral standards of SIU School of Medicine, providing excellent service to internal and external customers through collaboration and partnership, compassion and respect, integrity and accountability, diversity and inclusion, and continuous learning and improvement.
  • Teaching (90%)
    • Teach genetics and biochemistry in the first-year medical curriculum through lectures, active‑learning sessions, case‑based activities, workshops, review sessions, and assessment activities.
    • Facilitate problem‑based learning and other small‑group sessions for first-year medical students.
    • Meet with first-year medical students individually and in groups to help them understand, apply, and integrate genetics and biochemistry concepts; provide feedback, tutoring, and remediation support as needed.
    • Develop and revise learning objectives, instructional materials, cases, formative and summative assessments, and student learning resources in collaboration with course/unit directors and other faculty in accordance with best practices in education and LCME accreditation standards.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Service (10%)
    • No clinical/patient‑care responsibilities.
    • Serve as a faculty advisor to a small group of first‑year medical students as assigned.
    • Participate in departmental and SIU SOM committees, which may include curriculum and assessment meetings, student support activities, and other committee service.
    • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Master’s degree in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical sciences, life sciences, science education with a specialty in genetics or biochemistry, or a closely related discipline.
    • Experience teaching.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
    • Sensitivity to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Ph.D. or other terminal degree in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical sciences, life sciences, medical/health professions education, or a closely related field.
    • Experience teaching genetics and biochemistry.
    • Experience teaching in a medical school or at the graduate level.
    • Experience facilitating problem‑based learning, case‑based learning, or other active‑learning formats.
    • Experience developing learning objectives, instructional materials, and formative and summative assessments for health‑profession or life‑science learners.
    • Experience advising, tutoring, mentoring, or providing remediation support to students.
