Job Summary
The School of Aviation in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking qualified applicants for an Assistant Instructor/Assistant Lecturer position. The effective date of appointment is August 11, 2026. This is a 9‑month, term, non‑tenure track appointment. The position supports the baccalaureate degree in Aviation Technologies developed to prepare aviation technicians with advanced technical skills.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. ResponsibilitiesTeaching responsibilities include teaching 12 credit hours, instruction in the FAA‑approved Part 147 Airframe and Powerplant curriculum; maintaining class records as required by SIU Carbondale and FAA; participation in program/department support activities; performing maintenance on laboratory equipment. The instructor must attend department meetings as required and support SIU’s mission of student success and retention through actions and responsibilities within this role.
They may engage in other assignments as determined by the School Director.
Minimum Qualifications: Possess a valid FAA Mechanic Certificate with Airframe and Powerplant ratings, a minimum of three years of industry experience in aviation maintenance or a related field, and at least one degree in an aviation related discipline. For Assistant Instructor an earned Bachelor’s degree. For Assistant Lecturer an earned Master’s degree. SIU will consider tested experience in accordance with SIU's Faculty Qualifications and Tested Experience Policy in place of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications: Successful post‑secondary teaching experience in aircraft maintenance and/or product support.
