Position Overview
Recreation staff are support staff, they are hard-working, organized, reliable, willing to go the extra mile, ensure the safety and well being of our students. Support staff must have the ability and skills to develop a positive rapport with the students while having the ability to challenge behaviors when required. Support staff are often in the community actively participating in recreation activities with the students, therefore it is a requirement to act professionally while representing Brehm.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Creating safe environment where students can work on deficits and practice new behaviors (often times off campus in the community)
- Develop a rapport with each student by being an active listener, provide support and assist the student(s) reach their goals
- Develop & maintain an empathetic relationship with students
- Empower students to practice self-advocacy skills
- Assisting students with methods of building and maintaining interpersonal relationships
- Encourage students to utilize the Communication Model
- Hold students accountable on the Residential Tier System
- Report and document behavioral incidents
- Utilize the internal Communication Log to document happenings on shift with appropriate communications
- Follow medical protocols, including supervising distribution of medications and completing medical incident reports
- Screen materials brought in by students
- Read and respond to emails daily while working
- Assist in managing conflict resolution
- Ensure health and safety regulations are met during travel in school vehicles
- Cooperate and participate with staff and students during shifts
- Communicate effectively with students, staff and Student Life Residential Staff
- Actively participate in assigned recreational activities
- Supervise students and activities
- Model communication skills, positive behavior (ie., no profanity, loud volume) and a professional manner (hygiene and dress)
- Participate in inservice trainings
- Maintain schedule of activities and discuss proposed changes with immediate supervisor
- Complete required administrative tasks such as time cards, purchase orders and vehicle check logs
- Ensure all receipts, keys, credit cards and money are turned in at the end of each shift
- Ensure company vehicles are kept neat and clean after each outing and report any vehicle issue to direct supervisor

- On campus activities (indoor and outdoor), local community outings and activities in neighboring cities & states (Paducah, Ky, Cape Girardeau, Mo, St. Louis, Mo.)
- Scheduled for an average of 20 - 28 hours per week
- Weekday afternoons - M - F - 2:45PM - 4:45PM
- Weekends Saturday & Sunday - 12:45PM - 4:15PM
- Some longer shifts on Saturdays & occasional Sundays (long weekends) 1 - 2 times a month to compensate for longer travel time to activities
- 10 month academic year
- Non - benefits eligible
- This position is very active and may require standing, running, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting, bike riding, swimming, canoeing and fishing
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Preferred candidates pursuing higher educational degree in areas of, human services, outdoor education/recreation, physical education/training, social work, educational related fields, speech & language, rehab & psychology
- Experience working with Jr High & High School age students
- Experience with learning differences
- Experience with conflict resolution, problem solving and mediation experience
- Residential/boarding/camp experience/school experience
- A valid Illinois driver's license
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
- Ability to pass a driving background check
- Ability to maintain clean driving record
- Valid vehicle insurance
- Physical exam and TB test
- Provide First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to participate in class at Brehm
- Director of Student Life
The Illinois State Board of Education requires that all employees of a school be fingerprinted for a background check.
This position requires staff to drive students using a company vehicle to their recreation activities on select weeknights and weekends.
