Lecture Position in Industrial Design

The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU Carbondale) invites applications for a Lecture position in Industrial Design. This position is 25% FTE. The successful candidate will teach one Industrial Design course during the Fall and Spring semesters. Ideal candidates will have prior industrial design professional experience and teaching capabilities. Due to the newly established $100,000 fee for H-1B petitions requesting consular processing outside of the U.S., Southern Illinois University is unable to provide H-1B sponsorship at this time for any prospective applicant who is outside of the U.S. and requires consular processing.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. Teaching undergraduate and graduate level design courses. (one course per semester) This includes holding office hours, grading, and submission of final grades.

Develop course materials that prepare students for subsequent design courses.

Participate in Design Portfolio Evaluation and occasional program planning or recruitment activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must meet one of the following:

• A terminal degree in a design-related discipline. (e.g., Ph.D. in Design, MFA in Industrial Design, MDes or MS in Industrial Design, or closely related field) by time of hire.
• A BFA or BA degree with a specialization in Industrial Design plus a minimum of 5 years of professional industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior college-level teaching experience.
• Professional experience in industrial design practice.
• Experience with shop tools, rapid prototyping, and digital fabrication workflows.

The Design program is housed in 24,000 sq/ft Pulliam Hall Design Wing that includes the Design Research Studio, a print lab, a fabrication lab consisting of 3D printers, a laser cutter, vinyl cutter, and other fabrication equipment, and a complete wood and metal shop. All classes are taught in wi-fi equipped classrooms supporting integration of hand and computer skills. The Design program currently has 50 students enrolled in its two specializations.

The School of Art and Design (SoAD) has 15 T/TT faculty members, 13 NTT faculty members, approximately 145 undergraduate students, 32 graduate students and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). SoAD offers: a BFA degree in Art with specializations in Communication Design, Industrial Design, Art Education, Pre-Art Therapy, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, Metalsmithing;

a BA degree in Art with specializations in Art Education, Art History, General Studio, Photography; a MFA degree with specializations in Design, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, and Metalsmithing; and a graduate certificate in Art History.
