Position: NTT Faculty - Assistant Instructor (Head Start Lead Teacher)

This is a non-tenure-track faculty appointment at one of four locations in Jackson and Williamson Counties. Reporting to the Center Director, the Lead Teacher maintains a program of developmentally appropriate classroom instruction and provides a safe and nurturing environment in accordance with the Head Start Program Performance Standards, Program Policies and Procedures, and Department of Children and Family Services Licensing Standards.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. This is a grant-funded position represented by SIU Carbondale Non-Tenure Track Faculty Association/IEA-NEA. Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver high-quality, developmentally, and culturally appropriate instruction for three to five-year-old children. This includes leading large group leaning times in a manner consistent with CLASS philosophy and Developmentally Appropriate Practice.
  • Prepare, implement, and post weekly study guides in accordance with Creative Curriculum studies and curriculum fidelity guidelines.
  • Engage in classroom management strategies that keep all children both physically and emotionally safe. This includes implementing active supervision, ensuring that no child is ever left unattended.
  • Promote parent involvement through appropriate, respectful, and timely communication with families.
  • Complete accurate and timely developmental screenings and other outcome measures as required by the department.
  • Schedule and complete home visits and parent-teacher conferences per requirements, discussing child outcomes, school readiness, and working to strengthen the home to school connection.
  • Fulfill role as a mandated reporter by ensuring suspected child abuse or neglect is reported to state hotline.
  • Ensure full implementation of child Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) by reviewing child files, attending IEP meetings, and individualizing instruction and providing accommodations as directed.
  • Actively participates in identifying and securing in-kind contributions from families and the community and submitting accurate and timely documentation.
  • Upon hire, the candidate will be expected to complete and track annual professional development requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field with documented completion of 18 hours of approved ECE related coursework.
    • Two years of full-time, paid experience working with three to five-year-old children.
