Engineering Manager - Embedded Systems

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager with a strong background in embedded systems and a passion for building high-performing engineering teams. This role will lead a cross-functional team of hardware and software engineers, with responsibility for technical execution, project delivery, team development, and continuous engineering improvement.

The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on technical expertise with proven leadership, project management, and customer-facing experience.

Location:

Nashville, TN;
Carbondale, IL;
Louisville, KY;
St. Louis, MO; or another location within reasonable proximity to Carbondale, IL.

Work Arrangement:
Flexible/remote, with approximately one onsite visit per month for team collaboration, leadership activities, and key business engagements.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a cross-functional engineering team of approximately 8 hardware and software engineers.
• Own team performance, project delivery, quality, schedules, and technical outcomes.
• Allocate engineering resources based on project priorities, skills, and timelines.
• Provide technical leadership for hardware/software integration, system development, circuit design, debugging, and complex engineering challenges.
• Ensure effective technical reviews, verification, documentation, and adherence to engineering standards.
• Drive projects from planning through completion, ensuring milestones are achieved on time with minimal rework.
• Coach, mentor, and develop team members, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and skills development.
• Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, documentation, and workflows.
• Support customer interactions, technical discussions, and customer-facing meetings.
• Serve as a technical escalation point and support solution development, recommendations, and quotations.
• Promote knowledge sharing and collaboration across engineering teams.
• Help establish consistent engineering practices while maintaining flexibility and responsiveness to customer needs.

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading engineering teams in embedded systems, electronics, or related environments.
• Strong technical background in hardware/software integration and system-level development.
• Experience managing end-to-end delivery of customer-driven engineering projects.
• Strong understanding of embedded systems development and engineering processes.
• Ability to balance hands-on technical expertise with leadership and strategic decision-making.
• Strong skills in resource planning, prioritization, and project execution.
• Excellent leadership, mentoring, communication, and team-building skills.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and technologies.
• Experience interacting directly with customers and providing technical guidance is highly desirable.
