Are you a customer service-oriented Courier Driver? If so, the Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS) wants to meet you!

IHLS is seeking a full-time Courier Driver for our Carbondale hub to support our member libraries across central and southern Illinois. Courier Drivers are key to IHLS’s mission to help libraries provide quality services, including the sharing of resources such as library books and a wide variety of other materials that enrich the lives of patrons.

Full-time day shift: 40 hours a week. Shift: 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Pay: $17.72 per hour.

The IHLS Courier Driver delivers books, library materials, and equipment to and from member libraries or other designated locations based on a prescribed daily route, while ensuring safe and proper lifting and driving practices. Tasks may include sorting, loading, and unloading library materials into the delivery vehicle.

• High school graduate or GED equivalent.
• 3‑year driver’s license holder.
• Must be 25 years of age or older to be on the corporate auto insurance.

• Work independently.
• Sort books and library materials based on established location codes.
• Frequently lift tubs of books and other library materials.
• Drive daily on established routes and follow safe driving procedures.
• Assume responsibility for entering unattended delivery sites using an alarm or key.
• Excellent oral communication skills and a strong customer‑service focus.
• Professional business attitude with a pleasant demeanor.
• Use a personal computer and basic Microsoft Office programs.

Most work is performed driving a van and assisting in the delivery and pick up of library materials. Weather conditions may occur. Sorting and loading may happen indoors and outdoors.

• Extensive periods of sitting while driving up to 400 miles daily; repetitive use of arms and legs; moving the whole body.
• Supply ability to shelve materials up to 6 feet and bend to ground level while sorting items.
• Exert up to 40 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
• Transport tubs containing books and other materials weighing up to 40 pounds, moving approximately 50 feet; handle around 50 tubs per day, loaded/unloaded four times at various locations.
• Use a computer and check emails.
