Data Scientist, Research Scientist
Overview
Research Associate position in the School of Computer Science & Informatics. The Leverhulme Trust funds a 3-year project at Cardiff University to enable automated determination of the 3D atomic structure of metal nanoparticles, in collaboration with the Schools of Chemistry and Computer Science & Informatics, combining machine learning with electron microscopy.
The researcher will develop novel 3D reconstruction techniques using machine learning, constructing and training deep learning models to output atomic coordinates from atomic-resolution images. The role involves collaboration with researchers in the School of Chemistry, supervised by Dr Thomas Slater, and data will be acquired on the aberration-corrected Spectra 200 (S)
TEM at Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI) using automated acquisition methodologies.
The position is full-time (35 hours per week) and available from 1 September 2026 (or as soon as possible after this date) for 36 months.
Responsibilities- Develop novel 3D reconstruction techniques using machine learning; design, train and evaluate deep learning models to determine atomic coordinates from atomic-resolution images.
- Collaborate with researchers in the School of Chemistry and the School of Computer Science & Informatics; work under the supervision of Dr Thomas Slater.
- Utilise data acquired on the Spectra 200 (S)
TEM and apply automated acquisition methodologies.
- You will possess or be near the completion of a PhD in related areas or have relevant industrial experience.
- Salary: £41,064 per annum (Grade
6), with 4 annual increments up to £46,049 per annum at the top of the scale. - Contract:
36 months, full-time (35 hours per week).
- Blended working: time on campus and time at other locations (e.g., home) where feasible and appropriate.

Overview / Trosolwg
Rydym yn ceisio recriwtio Cydymaith Ymchwil brwdfrydig, uchel ei gymhelliant i ymuno â’r Ysgol Cyfrifiadureg a Gwybodeg i weithio ar raglen ymchwil gyffrous newydd. Mae Ymddiriedaeth Leverhulme wedi ariannu prosiect 3 blynedd ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd er mwyn galluogi pennu strwythur atomig 3D nanoronynnau metel yn awtomataidd. Mae’r prosiect yn gydweithrediad rhwng ymchwilwyr yn yr Ysgol Cemeg a’r Ysgol Cyfrifiadureg a Gwybodeg, gan gyfuno dulliau dysgu peirianyddol arloesol â microsgopeg electronau o safon fyd-eang.
Bydd yr ymchwilydd yn datblygu technegau ail-greu 3D newydd gan ddefnyddio dysgu peirianyddol, gan greu a hyfforddi modelau dysgu dwfn i allbynnu cyfesurynnau atomig o ddelweddau cydraniad atomig. Oherwydd natur gydweithredol y prosiect, bydd cyfle i’r ymchwilydd weithio ag ymchwilwyr yn yr Ysgol Cemeg, o dan oruchwyliaeth Dr Thomas Slater, sy’n arbenigwyr ym maes microsgopeg electronau. Caiff y data a ddefnyddir i hyfforddi a dadansoddi’r modelau dysgu peirianyddol ei gaffael ar y (S)
TEM Spectra 200 a gywirir ar sail egwyriannau yn Sefydliad Catalysis Caerdydd (CCI), gan ddefnyddio methodolegau caffael awtomataidd.
Byddwch yn meddu ar PhD, neu ar fin cwblhau doethuriaeth mewn maes cysylltiedig neu’n meddu ar brofiad diwydiannol perthnasol.
Gallwn gynnig y cyfle ichi weithio…
